2 weeks post up,got check up Question?

Hallo everyone, tomorrow will be 2 weeks that I had my robotic radical Hysterectomy, the path report came back with negative margins and neg. lymph nodes How often will I have to go for check up's from now on and what will be done there? My first follow up appointment is on June 14th. I had Stage 1a2 Cervical Cancer, what does that mean as far the chances for recurrence go?For anyone having to consider Hysterectomy I highly recommend the robotic assisted one done with the Da Vinci Robot,I was out of the hospital the next day,off the pain med's 1 1/2 day's after and for the most part the gas related pains hurt more than the incision site's. 5 day's after surgery I was able to go to Walmart with my sister who was visiting. All that and walking around the yard helped to get rid of those awful gais pains. Now I"ve got to cure my Urinary Tract Infection which I probably got from my foley catheter. Tomorrow I'm off to see the Urologist, supposedly they saw "some Obstruction" near my left kidney on the CT Scan they did prior to my Hysterectomy... Thank's in advance for your answer's! Annette.

Hi Annette,

That is great news on your path report! I am glad your recovery is going smoothly, be sure to still be careful not to overdo it even though you are feeling good.

The American Cancer Society website states that: "The 5-year survival rate for early invasive cancer of the cervix is 92%" My doctor told me 90% for my stage 1B1.

For whatever reason, I am having trouble finding cure rates with Google today. Maybe someone else will come along with more information.

It would be a good topic to bring up with your doctor at your next appointment.

Remember, these are just statistics. My doctor told me he really doesn't like them, his feeling is you are either cured or you aren't - you can't be 90% cured. Bottom-line, I think it is hard to apply a statistic to an individual.

Best wishes and s

Added:

After my intial post-op period, I began the 4 month plan for checkups. A lot of the ladies here go every 3 months. I have a pelvic exam and a pap smear. Once a year, I will have a Pet/Ct scan.

The rates they give us are for survival, 5 years out. The reason for that is usually because they only follow women for 5 years. They assume that if it hasn't come back within 5 years you are 'cured'.

It looks like the chance of recurrence for stage 1 is 5%. Pretty good odds!
My gyn/onc said that 80% of cervical cancer recurrences happen in the first 2 years post diagnosis. So the further out you get, the less chance you have of recurrence. My tumor was a 1B2 and I had a 20% chance of recurrence. After 2 years, my chance of recurrence went down to 4%.

Best,
Janie
