Vitamins any ideas???

I was wondering if anyone has changed the type of vitamin they take since thier hysterectomy. I had a tah with sbo. I have been taking a womens daily multi vitamin. I am wondering if I should be taking something more directed towards someone who is going through menopause??? And also because osteoporosis runs in my family. Anyone been told by there doc to take something else??? Thanks for any info. Amber

Vitamins any ideas???

Hi Amber, I switched to a multivitamin that does not have iron in it. I don't need the iron now that I am not bleeding all the time. If you were anemic you may need it but I don't. Just look on the label and it will tell you if it has iron. Several formulas don't. My cholesterol has gone up a little so I am taking the kind that says it will help lower it. I hope it works!
Good Luck.

Vitamins any ideas???

Hi Amber; I'm extremely picky about vitamins and have done a lot of research on them over the years and I found an excellent supplement made by Vitamin World (they have shops, or you can purchase online) called Mega Vita Min for Women that has every important vitamin and mineral in it in all the right amounts including the B vitamins which are very important for all post-puberty women, C, Calcium and Magnesium (which all work together), plus many of the herbal products recommended for women with PMS or Menopause like Dong Quai, Chaste Tree Berry, Wild Yam, Red Clover and Soy Isoflavones. It does have some disclaimers on the side regarding allergies and medications, particularly one that says if you take HRT to consult your doctor first (since a lot of the herbal supplements act as natural hormones), and of course you should always consult your doctor first anyway so you have the best and safest products for your particular health needs. From what I've read and been told, the most important vitamins/minerals that are needed after menopause would be Calcium and Magnesium which work together to prevent osteoporosis, Vitamin C for general immune support and which should be taken with calcium to aid its absorption, and all the B vitamins which help with smooth muscle contraction and stress reduction (stress depletes ALL your vitamins). Check it out online and if there's an ingredient listing, print it out and show it to your doctor and see what he/she recommends. Good luck and good health to you!

Vitamins any ideas???

Amber,
Here's a list of supplements/vitamins that we should be taking Necessary Supplements

Calcium is VERY important, along with magnesium. That one is numero uno most important!

I prefer to take my supplements separately. This way I know I am getting just the right amount. I think most of the multi vitamins may have too much or too little and you can't control the amounts. It's either all or nothing.

As always, do check with your doctor before taking any new supplements.

Amberlyn,
You should at the very least be taking Calcium along with magnesium. We all need Calcium, hrt or not.

Here's a thread with some information for those not taking hrt http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/showthread.php?t=12626

Prior to my hyst, I was taking a multi-vitamin and an iron supplement. Afterwards I talked to my doctor about what to take and he suggested a multi-vitamin and additional calcium.
