Help - Surgery soon and I'm so anxious!

My op is on Monday and I am suffering with various stress symptoms leading up to it.
Can't keep off the toilet and I have a permanant headache.
I've got lots to do before Monday and no time to do it.
Can't keep any food down, I'm starving and supposed to be going out for a meal before I go in hospital!
I'm not usually a stressed person and tend to take everything in my stride so I'm finding it very difficult.
Also had dreams last night in which I was surrounded by babies!!!!
I think I'm loosing it!!!!!!
Is this normal or is it just me?

Not just you, it's normal. Please call your doc & ask for something to help with your anxiety for the next 3 days. Let him/her know you are having severe headaches & diarrhea from the anxiety. My doc prescribed me a few xanax, which helped. Nothing will completely calm your nerves, but you shouldn't have to be sick the last few days before surgery. I hope you feel better soon & best of luck with your surgery Monday!

Yes! You are very normal. This is, after all, major, life-altering surgery and its normal to be apprehensive, stressed, irritable, moody, sad, all of the above. Some of the ladies have asked their doctors for some anti-anxiety meds for the days before surgery. You might want to ask about that. You really should have some food in the days before, up, until, of course, the point when you have to fast.
If it helps any, the surgery wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined it. The pain post op was quite tolerable, with meds, of course. Much less than when AF visited.
Take care and ask your doctor for some help,

I agree, call your doctor. Xanax is a wonderful thing for anxiety.

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time of things right now.

As hard as this must sound right now, the other (((sisters))) are right -- you need to find some way to try and relax a bit before your surgery. It's just one more way you can give your docs every possible advantage in taking good care of you, and here's why: If your body is overly stressed and tense, you can't "give yourself" to the surgeon. In a very real sense, surgery is an extremely intimate (and I don't mean that sexually, of course) experience, and you need to be at peace to the greatest extent possible.

Here are my all-time favorite stress relievers: the tried-and-true bubble bath, long walks, a trip to the amusement park, a double feature of the funniest movies you can find.

Also, if you're finding yourself unable to keep any food down or spending too much time on the toilet, you may be getting dehydrated, and that's not good for surgery, either. Try bland foods, plenty of water and tea, and maybe ginger ale to quell the stomach.

If you feel you'll need medication for the anxiety, now is the time to call so it will have time to give you some good calm time before your trip to the hospital.

I wish you all the best. Soon you will be on the road to recovery, and I can't wait to hear how everything goes for you after you're home.

I was the same way before my surgery. In fact, the day before I was a wreck! I wished I had asked for a mild sedative for the few days before.

The good news is, you are only a couple of days away and then it will all be over. I had a TVH on Monday and feel pretty darn good today. Try to find things to occupy your mind. Make a detailed list of everything you want to get done and then cross them off as you complete them. This will give you a focus and sense of accomplishment. Cut yourself a break with anything you don't finish.

Hang in there! I look forward to seeing you on the other side!

So sorry you are anxious, but like the other ladies said, don't suffer like his. I have had to take anti-anxiety meds before and it is OK. In fact i will get some from my doctor just in case I need it as the surgery gets closer... You do need to relax and not stress your mind and body out before the surgery.... i would call the doctor... take good care

Help - Surgery soon and I'm so anxious!

Nobody knows anxiety better than me. I have suffered with it for years. And you are not alone. I was such a mass before my surgery. Like you I couldn't eat, drink or stay out of the bathroom. I was throwing up and passing out. I felt horrible because I thought my reactions were abnormal. Well, my Dr. gave me anxiety meds and they helped. But I also mad a point to do relaxation therapy of mty own twice a day. I just made myself go laydown and listen to this spa CD I had bought. I also didn't do anything the weekend before my surgery that was in any way connected to it. Didn't clean, cook or ready anthing.

Now that I'm on the other side...I could kick myself!! It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. In fact between the anesthesia, the morphine and the other pain meds I don't even remember that day. In fact I don't really remember the castle at all. I'm so glad I went through with the surgery. I am soooo much better now and it has only been 9 wks. I'm like a new person!

Thankyou!

Many thanks to all of you for your messages of support and for your advice!
Feeling much better today after a spot of retail therapy.
Managed to keep a cheese sandwich and some boiled rice in my system, so to those of you who recommended a bland diet, a big thankyou!
Case is packed, housework not finished but there are more important things in life!
Once again, Thankyou!!!
