Am I doing the right thing? Help

Hello, Well my surgery is Monday June 26,2006. I have been so nervous that I have started having nightmares about the surgery and what could go wrong. Will I ever be the same again? I don't have an intimate relationship with my husband hardly at all anymore because the pain, bleeding, but I have heard so many things about how after a Hysterectomy women lose their Sex drive. So when i have the surgery will it be worse than now? I am worried about my marriage and myself too. Maybe it is just pre surgery fears, but this is really bothering me. I told my Dr. I was having alot of nervous thoughts and feelings he said that is normal because this is a major surgery, but the nightmares of dying on the table and waking up a totally different person along with regret are getting to me. I know after 2 years of pain, constant bleeding, and cervical cancer I need to have a Hysterectomy. It seems that as it gets closer the worse my nerves get and the fears. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jenny!

Experiencing pre-op fear is so common, we even have an archived article about it:

Coping With Pre-Op Anxiety & Fear

You are entirely normal. I was such wreck in the days prior to my surgery, that my doctor prescribed me a sedative. It won't be long now until you enter the Castle to begin your journey to good health.

Hang in there! I'm sending many positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery.

I did the same thing but I agree this is neccessary for you and with better health and less pain I've heard women comment their marriages and lives become so much better. Take this time and concentrate on getting your body as healthy and rested as possible and concentrate on the positive effects this will have on your life..hugs to you--we made it and you will too!

Oh! !! You are not in this alone! All of us have either gone through this or are going through this, and you wouldn't be normal if you weren't scared! I too have had the nightmares...that is when I do sleep at all.

Just remember you have a DH, physical side of the marriage may be rough now, but it WILL get better. Make sure your Dr does preop hormone tests including a testosterone level so you have a benchmark on what is normal for YOU. If your marriage and relations were good before al this happened it will be just as good if not better after, just give it some time

And of course we are all here pulling for you......

I am not a Dr and any advice is my own opinion, Please consult your Dr for OFFICIAL advice....after all you are paying him/her good money for that advice!
