Is heartburn/indigestion common effect after surgery

I had second surgery 7/5/06 cuff repair. Ever since I have had indigestion off and on real bad. I never had it before or after any surgery. Is this a normal side effect? Has anyone else had this? It is so annoying

I don't know if it's normal or not, but I sure have had some indigestion, gas and stomach pain/burning since surgery. I think some of it is due to the pain meds. Even over-the-counter stuff like ibuprofen can make your tummy pretty sore. I would call your doc just to be sure, though.
Hope you feel better soon!

Is heartburn/indigestion common effect after surgery

I have a TAH on 6/21/06 and also had bad indigestion. My dr advised taking Gas-X and said this is normal due to all of the gas they pump in when doing the surgery. If you are very uncomfortable, you may want to check with your dr. I just passed the 2 week mark and my digestion still is not back to what it was before. Mr dr again says this is normal with all of the meds. Good luck!

Is heartburn/indigestion common effect after surgery

Dawn2139,

I have a little experience with the gastro issues since surgery.

At my 3 week check up, I couldn't drink coffee. My doc thought I had developed an ulcer from the stress of the surgery. He advised me to take one Prilosec OTC per day.

At my 6 week check up, I could drink maybe one cup of coffee. One coke made me excessively belch for 24 hours. And foods like broccli and Brussel Sprouts gave me a full feeling under my ribs upon going to bed. My gyn said this was not normal and not from the surgery, rather he thought the surgery stirred up something else. He referred me to a gasto thinking it my be Gastritis.

The gastro thinks I have GERD, acid reflux. He gave a an Rx for Nexium 2 x a day. Basically, I'm to eat a high protein, low fat diet. Eat smaller meals and include snacks. It's only been 3 days since I've seen the gastro and already I'm better. However, previously prior to surgery, I use to have frequent heartburn and a nagging cough. I always was "clearing my throat" too. All symptoms of GERD, I just didn't realize it.

The gastro thinks it's possible that when I was filled with gas for the possible LAVH, it may have pushed up on a hiatal hernia, stirring up my GERD.

Hope this might help you a bit.

GladIt'sOver,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of that. If I'm not back to normal at my 6 wk I will ask my Dr. That's what I like about this website...so much info you don't find anywhere else.

Thanks again and good luck!

Gladitsover - I was on prescription "tummy meds" for over 6 years. When they finally put me on Nexium I was fine in a month and it's very rare that I would even take Tums now (except after this surgery sometimes). The nexium made my tummy hurt most of the month, but I toughed through it and it was really, really worth the wait. I hope it works as well for you!

Movingforward,

I have only been on the Nexium for 3 days now and already markedly better. I have also changed my diet, high protien low fat, smaller meals with snacks.

I go back to the gastro in 6 weeks. I think I've had this GERD, acid reflux, for 20+ years and never known it.

Do you still take the Nexium? If so at what dose? I am currently on 2 x a day.

I don't guess this GERD will ever go away, I just need to deal with it. Well.... you know, it's still better than those HEAVY periods I use to get. LOL.

Anyway, I wanted to lose weight, so this will "make" me do it, without excuses. I sort of welcome the change in eating. I knew I needed to do it anyway.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Gladit'sover!

After all those years of 2-3 times daily stomach meds I took Nexium twice a day for a month...and that was it! I was done with all those stomach meds. It felt like a miracle. I hope it goes as well for you! I hear that most folks on Nexium aren't on it any longer than 2 months tops.

Take care!

Is heartburn/indigestion common effect after surgery

Movingforward,

Thanks again for the input. I can wish for only 2 months on Nexium, but one of my symptoms is this hacky cough. I've had that cough for 20+ years. So I'm assuming that I might be on the Nexium longer? We'll see, I do go back to the gastro 8/16, for a 6 week check up.

I was caught so off gaurd with his Dx of acid Reflux, that I didn't think to ask many questions. Shoot, I didn't even really know what it was! However, this time,...... you know us Sisters.... I'll go armed with the note pad and a LIST of questions! LOL. My gyn just finally came to expect such. LOL. Then he would joke with me saying, "now check your list a second time, I don't want to leave a question unaswered!"

I am greatly improved in only 3 day on Nexium. I'll do yet more research, prepare my questions and stick as best I can to the diet and exercise.

If you don't mind me asking, did you also see a gastro? If so, what did he think your Dx was. Be interesting to hear after 6 years on other Rx's with no results. Then get a miracle in only a month on Nexium. Hey.... maybe that's my tune too. Twenty years of symptoms and cured in a month! LOL. I got the feeling this would be a permanent Rx.... We'll see.

Thanks again.
