ovarian cyst with no ovary?

okay see who can figure this one out.
I had my hysto in 2000 with right ovary removal and then in 2005 I lost my left ovary. Then today I find out that in the past year I have had 3 pelvic scans in wich a radiologist stated I had a cyst on my right ovary. at my first scan It was 1mm and at my last scan (last week) it had grown to 1.6cm. Please note the I found out about this because I have been getting sicker and sicker for the past 4 months ( weight gain, abdom bloating, severe fatigue, swelling in my right foot , muscle weakness, gastrointestinal problems ect) I also found out that my liver enzymes have been elevated for the past 11 months. ( and NO-- my Dr. did not make me aware of any of this)I just found out when I obtained my medical records.
So anyone with suggestions, or comments would be great. thanks

ovarian cyst with no ovary?

Hi there Hipchick

I am going through much the same thing. I have a thread asking for advice and input. I am finding the whole thing scary and confusing. The one cyst (where I had the precancerous ovary) is 17cm x 12cm x 11cm and that is huge. I spoke to my surgeon who tells me that he may have left some ovarian tissue behind. I won't go through the whole story because I have posted in some detail. I had never heard of this happening, but have done a search on "ovarian remnant syndrome" and have learned that it has happened to others. Because the cyst is where I had a pre-malignancy I am concerned about cancer. I totally missed the most obvious of signs .. total reversal of bowel habits. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and have had daily diarrhea for 25 years, and suddenly out of the blue I became constipated. This should have brought up red flags to say the least. Perhaps we can lean on each other's shoulders through this. I have to run before the shops close, but will check in again after I get back

Take care

ovarian cyst with no ovary?

There is a condition called Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS). Basically at the time of surgery if an ovarian cells are left behind there is a chance of ovarian cysts developing. I had my right ovary removed in 2000 and my left 2004. There was a lot of scar tissue from the 2000 surgery and while the GYN/ONC was confident he removed the entire ovary in 2004 due to all the scar tissue there is and was a possiblity of ovarian cells remaining. My GYN/ONC will not committ to ORS as they cannot be sure if the cyst is of ovarian nature until they biopsy it. Right now the cyst is stable, my CA125 is stable and my FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels are rising, I am seen every 3 months. The doctor feels that right now a 3rd surgery carries lots of risks so we are watching and waiting. I have asked for surgery at this time, but, they are advising against it and I have had 3 opinions, the regular GYN, the radiologist and my GYN/ONC.

What are the chances of it being cancer, well I have a history of early stage, 1A in 2000 found in my right ovary, so that raises the odds in favor of the cyst being cancerous but the odds are still in my favor that it is not. I have complete trust and faith in my doctors and plan to follow their advise and course of treatment.

Ovarian Remnant Syndrome is supposedly rare, there isn't a lot of info to be found. The doctor to been seen for this condition is a GYN/ONC and not because it is cancerous or they even suspect cancer, it is because it is a complicated condition and GYN/ONCs have years more training they OB/GYNs.

Please let us know how the follow ups go. I am very interested in hearing how others are treated.

Hi again

Hi again Tracy

Looks like we are both heading to getting this sorted out. My appointment is on Monday as around noon. My GP is still focused on the fact that my growth is so huge, and needs to come out so we shall see whether the gyn agrees with that. I will try to get him to refer me on to a gyn-onc, but he may only do that if biopsy/pathology shows definite cancer. I hate red tape!! Gl with all your doctor's visits .. I will be thinking of you. You have reminded me that I am overdue for re-scanning of a large breast solid mass that they are watching *sigh* ... had to cancel last month cause I couldn't get in to where the scan was supposed to take place.

I'll be looking for good news from you

Take care

Kristy
