Confused, scared and unsure

Hi I'm a newbie from Australia. I have been suffering with heavy menstrual bleeding for awhile now and when my last period was going on the 7th week I'd had enough. I was tired, in pain, wearing up to 5 pads at atime. My GP put me on Primolut N to stop the bleeding so I can have vag ultrasound. The results were inconclusive. I have fibroids, cyst on the ovary and the uterine cavity is distended with thick endometrium. Living in a regional area we do not have a great choice of specialists but after researching found the best one and my Doc got me in urgently rather than waiting the 3 months expected. I'm 51 years old perimenopausal with all the hot flashes, night sweats etc. So went to gyno yesterday with my husband and eldest daughter. Specialist seemed rather taken aback when we all entered his office and none too pleased. I wanted family there for support. He was rather rushed, took general notes gave me a pap smear and booked me in for D & C, hysteroscopy as well as endometrial biopsy. We'll talk about results after this. As i have a few health probs already, insulin dependent diabetic, fibromyalgia I tried to ask questions but to no avail even though he was polite I still felt he was a little condescending with remarks such as 'well you are at that age aren't you'. I will have these procedures done but I am feeling a little overwhelmed and would like some advice on how to be more assertive when discussing results, options etc later on. Can anyone help? Evvie

Hi Evvie

How long do you have to wait for the tests and then the results? The specialist/gyn I'm with now was very thorough about having tests done -- bloodwork, vag ultrasound, abdom ultrasound, pap, uterine biopsy. That's a good start to see what's going on.
You are at the right place for support and ideas for your next visit with your Doc! This website is full of wonderful women and a lot of helpful information! My doctor this time is very kind and welcomes my "support person" --- my husband is very supportive but HATES anything medical, so I take a close friend with me instead. BUT, some great surgeons & specialists don't have the best bedside-manner either.
I would start by researching the tests you're having and what the possible outcomes could be. That way you can have some questions prepared (always write them down) for when you see him next. I don't ask if I can ask questions -- I say "I have some questions for you please - I'll try to be brief" and thank the doc when I'm done. It seems to work. Good luck to you with all this! I hope you get through the testing quickly and know where you're at!!

I am sorry that you were not able to ask all your questions.

You may find some answers to some of your questions in the Resource Database. Search for each of your procedures and you will find links to resources about them. You can also use the search tab at the upper, right of your screen to find other threads that include your procedures.

I had a hysteroscopy, lap, and D&C prior to my hyst. This is how my dr was able to diagnose me with endo.

I hope your procedures go well and you are able to avoid a hyst. in there!
