Pathology results today

I had my post op appointment today and found out that what they thought was mild cervical dysplasia ended up being severe once the pathology report came back. I had to do some research when I got home this afternoon and I have to say what I read scared me to death. It's kind of scary to learn that cancer could have been right around the corner at my age. While it verifies for me the reason I had the procedure done in the first place, I'm told now that I will still have to have annual pap smears, since there is still a chance I could come down with Vaginal cancer now that my cervix is gone. I think it's funny that they put age limits on things and make you feel like it couldn't possibly happen at a younger age. Like mammograms at 35? How many women in their twenties die every year from breast cancer? Beware of inaccurate paps is all I can say. So glad I had the surgery when I did. I was really starting to second guess myself. Should I have waited? apparently not, and I'm glad I didn't. Needless to say, not the best day of my life.

On a lighter side.. I was released to finally drive and plan on going back to work on Monday, but will still take it somewhat easy for the next few weeks. Hope you all had a better day than I did.

I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I went into surgery being told that I hyperplasia with just simple cells. All I was planning on having done was having my right ovary remmoved and a D and C. They had done a biopsy in the office of the endrometrial tissue 4 weeks prior to surgery and told me that it came back with no evidence of anything to be seriously concerned about. I woke up having both ovaries and my uterus out because they had findings suspicous for being cancerous. Unfortunately, hubby had to make the call while I was out and I believe he made the best decision possible given what my wishes were. My mother though expressed very strongly at first that she thought things were too rushed and we should have waited for the final results. Actually she had been against my surgery to remove the 12 cm cyst I had on my ovary with hopes it would miraculously clear up on its own.

A week later we got the path results and there was indeed an area that was actually cancerous. As awful as it was to hear that, it would have been awful having to go back in for additional surgery. I have to go back every 3 months for the next 2 years for pelvic exams, but hopefully won't need any further treatment as they got it very early.

You are brave going back to work at 2 weeks. Take it easy. I am no where near ready to go back.

I think it's scary that they can't come up with a more definitive test short of actually going in? As far as the work thing goes, My surgery was vaginal, went very smooth, and I'm feeling great. And I suppose it helps that I manage an office and no real psyical work required! I can sit and type at work same as I can at home

It sounds like your DH made a good call. I'm glad they got it all. It's just scary to me. I'm sure I'll settle down about it once I've had a few days to process the info.

Hope your recovery goes well

For me, I was a fairly small localized spot in the endrometrial tissue. The vast majority of it was still the simple cells. They had to get the little tube to hit the right spot in order to be able to detect the cancer. I keep getting told that because it was such a small spot and so early, it was a godsend that they caught it when they did. I am not quite emotionally to the point where I can really say that since it has only been a week since I heard the sentence "The pathology report indicated that you did have cancer."

I have a 10 inch vertical cut in my abdomen. Since I work in elementary special ed, not sure I am ready for the dozen or so waist high hugs I get every day walking in the hallway or dealing with behavioral outbursts. As much as I hate it I am taking the full 6 weeks.

s to you both! My mother was 65 and went for an annual after not going for many, many years. She had an "abnormal" pap and they scheduled the surgery right away. She had a small cancerous spot on her uterus. They said it was only on the inside wall and had not grown into the inner wall of the uterus so she didn't need chemo. Scared me to death. If I hadn't been having my annual done regularly that would have convinced me. Thank goodness you did what you did. I have nieces and I can't stress to them enough to be sure to get those annuals and to spring for the more accuarate pap test.

I haven't heard my pathology report yet, but he did find polyps in my uterus 2 months before the hysterectomy when I had an D and C. I had polyps on my cervix 5 years ago. You should go to my gratitude thread I started, and add NO MORE CANCER!!! That is a miracle in itself!

Adline, sorry you're not feeling well yet. I don't know if the doctor makes a huge difference or not?, but my doctor was excellent. No complications from the surgery and about a week out I was feeling totally normal, aside from bathroom visits those still twinge a bit. I hope you're feeling better soon.
