Has Anyone Experienced Mesh Erosion Through the Rectum?

I'm looking for any sisters to share their rectal mesh erosion experience with me. What were your symptoms? How was it diagnosed? What type of Dr repaired the erosion? What was the recovery like and what were your restrictions?
I am scheduled for mesh excision at the posterior end but have been having horrible rectal pain. The Uro/Gyn has not done a rectal exam stating he would perform a thorough exam while under anesthesia. My Gyn is concerned that I will need to have a colorectal surgeon on standby and can't understand why the Uro/Gyn has not at least done a simple digital rectal exam so he had me come in today. I do not have erosion through the vagina but the rectal tissue at the far end of the repair (nowhere near the erosion into the vagina) is very thin and he can feel the mesh just behind it. He thinks it will only be a matter of time before it does erode. And he thinks this is what is causing all the pain, the feeling of fullness into the vagina when I need to have a BM, and the feeling of pushing out ground glass when having a BM.
I am so very discouraged and depressed. I can't handle much more because every time I see my Dr it's some other part that's failing or giving me a problem. I feel like if I have to have any more vaginal surgeries that I will never be pain free again and never be able to have sex again.

Oh Michelle,
I am totally with your gyn, have you asked the uro/gyn what the plan is if there is errosion in your rectal area? I wouldn't sign those consent forms until I talked to him, he should have a colorectal surgeon on call for sure. I wouldn't want any one but a colorectal surgeon working inside my rectum. Please be insistant and pushy - you don't want to go through any more surgeries. I bet you are getting anxious now that it's less than 2 weeks away! I'm thinking and praying for you! HUGS!

I agree with bowlinggrl, did you ask him and he refuse? have you seen a colo rectal doc in the same hospital? I know this is depressing. The mesh is between the vagina and rectum right? Have you seen a colo rectal doc? I would just to have another opinion.let us know and God Bless.........

Has Anyone Experienced Mesh Erosion Through the Rectum?

Don't get me wrong, I think the Uro/Gyn is top notch but every time I mention the rectal pain he tells me he will examine me under anesthesia when I will be more relaxed and he can do a better exam. He usually will let me know what the possible causes for certain symptoms are but this time he isn't saying much. He told me that in all the years he has been doing this surgery, flying all around the country lecturing about mesh repairs and working at a teaching hospital he has never had a mesh erode through the rectum, "and I don't plan on having you be the first one".
When I left his office the other day I was comfortable with the procedure I am going to have. But you know how it is, because it's getting closer I have been thinking about it more and worrying myself into a tizzy. Then I really started to think about the possibility of more serious rectal complications. I don't want to have this surgery, have him do this rectal exam and find that I need more extensive repair involving the rectum and have to have another surgery or worse yet have it repaired by a Dr I am unfamiliar with and no nothing of his credentials. The hospital I am having this done is more than one hour away from home and I am not familiar with any of their local specialists.
That's why I called my Gyn. He is wonderful. He had me come right in to be examined. Now I am waiting for him to get back to me after he speaks to the Uro/Gyn to tell him what he found and talk to him about the possibility of having a colorectal surgeon in the OR.
I am very nervous about all this because I'm not sure where we can go from here. If the mesh needs to be removed completely I will be back to square one and dealing with prolapse again. The pain is constant now and I can't go back and undo what's been done so where exactly does this leave me?
