Sudden bald spot/16 days post op/tah/bso

This morning, about a 3" circle of hair broke off as I ran my fingers through my hair. The day after my surgery, this same area was very tender. It felt as if it had been bumped but there was no knot or bruise. I asked my dd if I had somehow bumped it or anything had fallen on it while I was asleep. He acted very concerned and rubbed it and checked it but didn't know anything about it being hurt. I blew it off as being irritated from being in the hospital bed...

Today I spoke with the nurse at his office. She said that none of the meds or hormones I am taking or the anesthesia should have caused this. She offered a referral to a dermatologist. I declined as I figure it will be grown out by the time I get an appointment.

I am not taking anything unusual...Vivelle .1 patch, an occasional percocet or toradol. I took Keflex for 10 days and Cleocin for a week to prevent infection. Also 5 doses of diflucan to ward off a yeast infection.

Any ideas?

Mimi - I'm sorry I can't help you..but wanted to bump this back to the top.

You might want to post this question in the hormone jungle too...it could be hormone related.

Hi Mimi...

I don't know if it is medically documented, but I have heard from many people that they have major hair changes following general anesthesia. I have LOTS more gray hair now...dunno if was from stress before the surgery, or from the drugs.

My hair colorist told me that she's seen many people with a change in hair texture as well.

I think you ought to follow up with the dermotologist as the nurse suggested....you might have something stress related, like alopecia....but at least you'd find out! Let us know what you find out!

hi Mimi,

I just read the insert to my Climara patch and it states that it can cause hair loss. I am wondering if your vivelle
patch could do the same? My Climara is made with Estradiaol.
See if you can get a hold of the package insert for the vivelle patch to see what it is says. Not the little hand out the pharmacies give because it is not as detailed as the insert. It still might be worth a trip to the dermatologist to see what is going on. He may be able to treat it so that it doesn't get worse.
