IV During TVh/Bso..... Please Read

Hi... I was wondering if anyone has had the problem I am having. I am almost 7 weeks post and I have a noticable swelling in the Vein in which My IV was inserted during surgery. It has a hard spot just above my wrist. The hard spot seems to have moved about an inch from where it was yesterday. Is it possible that it is a blood clot forming? I am not having any pain in my arm, but the area where the hard spot is sensitive to the touch. I might add that It took quite some time for the swelling from the IV to recede. Any Ideas?

I had the IV, with some minor bruising that took about a week to go away.
If I were you, I'd call the doctor. It may be nothing, but I wouldn't want the alternative to be true. Don't be afraid to ask, and the sooner the better.
Good luck,

Judy,
I'd say call your doctor right away. Seven weeks is a pretty long time. I'm 7 weeks as well and although my IV infiltrated as well on the very day it was pulled, and it was sore for a good couple of weeks, but has since completely healed. Since you say it's moving, I wouldn't mess around with it, just call to be on the safe side. Good luck and let us know!

Thanks

I will call my doctor tomorrow....I hope it isn't a blood clot. The vein is still a little swollen with a small bump at the end of the swollen vein. Do you know if there would be pain with a clot? No pain in the arm.

I had a blood clot in a deep vein in my leg. At first there was no pain, and then there was pain when walking. I'm not sure what your swelling is from, but don't wait until tomorrow to call the doctor. I'm not saying you should worry needlessly, but call just to be sure. Maybe he'll tell you it's nothing. Don't forget, we're approaching a holiday weekend, and if you can get him tomorrow, you'll have to wait until Tuesday.

I had forgotten all about the doctor not being in Monday because of the holiday. Thanks so much for the reminder.

Judy, I had TAH BSO 9/99 and where they put the IV in my hand I still have a big purple buldge, its very noticable. Its soft not hard, no pain. I think mine is just
that they stretched the vein or something, I'm not sure when I first noticed it or if it was there right away. Nancy

Bamasmiles
I agree with the other sisters to contact your doctor...
I'm 5wks now but just last week the vein where my IV was knotted up and looked swollen felt like a bruise my hand even started hurting it lasted for a couple of days and I was to the point that I was going to call my doctor the next day but it started to go down and didn't really hurt as much. It still feels weird and I can move it when I touch it..but if yours has moved I would definitely call the doctor. Good Luck and let me know what he says.

Yes, I did have that problem. Mine was very noticable hard bump and was very sore and slightly red. I showed my doctor at my one week checkup. He said it might be a clot. It was in the vein where the IV had been. He did not seem overly concerned and told me to go home and put moist heat compresses on it (I used one of those microwavable plastic things for sport injuries and wrapped it in a dampened washcloth; I tried just the washcloth but it didn't stay warm long enough). I did that for about two days before it started to go away (it is now gone by the way). I would definitely call your doctor or if he is not available there must be a backup in his office that you can call--I wouldn't self treat until you've talked to him/her.
