LAVH less blood loss??

You are actually less likely to suffer blood loss during an abdominal hyst because it is a much easier surgery (for the surgeon) There is room for them to work and they can get easy access to your organs. Laparascopic or vaginal surgery is more complex and there is more that can go wrong. Having said that laparascopic surgery is usually done by an experienced surgeon so it can be swings and roundabouts. If your surgery, whatever type you have, is successful with no complications then blood loss whatever procedure you have is minimal. By minimal I mean it can be as little as 100mls.

I lost very little blood during my SAH. Mine was done by a very experienced Harley Street surgeon and was performed at the top private hospital in London. The surgery went very well with no complications. Unfortunately during the night following my surgery I started beleding internally and ended up having a blood transfusion the following day. I lost more than 3 pints of blood into my abdominal cavity before it stopped on its own. I did not have to go back into surgery and am OK now although I do have a hematoma in my abdomen that will take a few months to dissipate. Unfortunately this is a risk of any surgery and hopefully it will not happen to you but the reason I am mentioning it is that if this happens, and it is one of the greatest fears I think we have going into surgery, you do survive it and you still recover and get better so don't panic. This doesnt happen very often whatever type of surgery you have and you cannot do anything to avoid it but if it does happen they deal with it or your body just comes to the rescue like mine did.

LAVH less blood loss??

My doc told me that blood loss during my LAVH would be inconsequential. Afterwards, I didn't even have to wear a pad. When I've had open abdominal surgeries in the past, I have been set back much further from the incisions and resulting trauma.

To see how little blood loss occurs during a LAVH, go to http://www.or-live.com/daVinci/1722/ You can watch a webcast that was broadcast live in September. It's pretty phenomnal. Not all lap procedures involve the da Vinci robotic arms but you can still get the idea by watching it the surgery. It's also neat to understand how the organs move about so freely once the gas has been introduced to the abdominal cavity. Best wishes ~
