should the ovaries stay or go?

Hi everyone - need some input please. Experiences after hysterectomy, to leave the ovaries or have these taken out? I don't know what to do. My OB GYN said to leave my ovaries in but it is still my decision. No fibroids found just excessive prolonged menstrual cycles for me. Help please - thank you!

Here are a couple articles that might help with your decision:

Keep Ovaries?
Keep Ovaries? Keep one or both?

For the benefit of my overall health, I kept my ovaries. It was the right choice for me.

Get a second medical opinion, do your research, and decide what is best for you!

should the ovaries stay or go?

I was in the same boat! My doc did say that since I'm just 43, my ovaries should work about 3 more years and that he would take them out if they appeared to be diseased or anything else detrimental. So I decided to proceed with the LAVH and keep my ovaries... and should they go into surgical menopause, it was a risk I was willing to accept. I'm happy to report that I've had no problems with them forgetting to wake up and produced hormones. Everything is right on track and I'm ahead of the healing expectations for someone who is almost 5 weeks post-op. Best wishes ~

I had my TAH in Feb. they left one ovary. The first four months were bad. Everything is really good now. I do not have PMS symptoms at all. Very rare hot flashes, usually if I am under extreme stress. Like I said things are good now. Good luck.

If you have the option of leaving the ovaries leave them. I'm four years post op leaving ovaries and am so glad to have them!

Hi Stirred2Soar,

I kept my ovaries. I am 2 yrs post-op now and they are still working. I am still very happy with my decision to leave them.

thank you so much for sharing your experiences - I do agree with everyone on ~ if the ovaries are healthy and nothing wrong with these, keeping them overall would be best for the individual. Although the age may be a factor and menopause may be around the corner, my ovaries are still set to do a better job providing health to me while the hormone replacement tablets are good but they probably would not produce the same hormones as what the ovaries will. Thanks everyone!
