Can hormones make hot flashes worse?

OK, I had a hysterectomy about 2 years ago. I took estrogen for about 6 months and then decided to quit. I went for a year with moderate symptoms and then, after I read some new research (probably OK to take if you start young and don't take for more than 20 years), I went back on the estrogen (cenestin) to see if I could help the hot flashes.

I've been back on about 2 weeks and it seems like it's worse!. No energy, sleepy all the time but can't sleep at night, hot flashes more frequently. I also started on cholesterol medicine at the same time. Could that have anything to do with it.?

I'm miserable with the sypmptoms but I sure don't want them to get worse. Anybody else have a problem with estrogen increasing symptom?

As you haven't taken any hrt for awhile, it may take your body some time to adjust. Hot flashes can be a sign of fluctuating hormone levels as your body adjusts to the hrt. I would give it a little more time and see if things get better. Keeping a journal of your symptoms can be very helpful.

If after a few more weeks the symptoms continue and get worse, it may be that the doseage needs to be tweaked or you may need another form of estrogen. Unfortunately, hrt is not one size fits all and for some of us, it can take adjusting the doseage and/or trying a few different things until we find the right fit.
