staying well until sugery
What is the best way to stay healthy until surgery, especially during this time of the yr?
I know washing hands and staying away from the sick as much as possible, but is there anything else?
I have 16 days until my surgery.
THANKS!

Check with your doctor as this is what mine told me, yours may feel differently. She told me that increasing my Vitamin C would help my body to heal. I specifically asked if I should/could take Airborne daily for the week before my surgery and she said absolutely, it was a great idea. As I said, check with your doctor as I've seen some that said not to, but that is a good way to stock up on Vit C and hopefully keep the germs away.

I would also go with Airborne. My family 'swears' by it. I made sure to start it 10 days before my surgery.

Ten days before my surgery I got a sinus and upper respiratory infection! So called my doc and immediately got on antibiotics (the 3 day pack). My doc said to use hand sanitizer everywhere and often like after touching money, and slathering it across the top of the shopping cart, after using the gas pump, after using a remote control. So I did. I also doubled my Vit C and was sure to not miss my multi-vitamin. Oh -- and here is something I did on my own that made me look very anti-social.... if I saw someone cough or sneeze, I'd hold my breath (subtlely) and then turn and go a different direction. I didn't want to walk thought their germs! Best wishes~

I have been very nervous about catching a cold for the past several weeks. My boss has a cold and my dh has had one for 2 weeks now. I have already gone through two bottles of hand sanitizer! My dh travels quite a bit so I have been lucky so far. I had my pre-op today and I told my doc I have tried to avoid sick people but they seem to be everywhere. He told me he would only cancel my surgery if I have a fever greater than 101.
I am feeling fine today so my prayers have been answered! Good luck to you!

I've been washing my hands constantly and trying to keep my distance from sick people. I'm also making sure I go to bed somewhat early so I don't get run down. I'm taking Echinacea and extra vitamin C, and other supplements, but I think both need to be discontinued prior to surgery.
Am I allowed to recommend a book? If not, please delete and I apologize.
I'm also reading a wonderful book called The Rapid Recovery Handbook by Elizabeth G. Motyka.
It has some great strategies for strengthening your immune system and body before, during and after surgery to decrease stress on your system and promote optimal healing.
I've been drinking an energy drink that they recommend that contains
green food powder (tastes yucky), aloe vera juice and whey protein and water. It's already giving me more energy. The aloe vera is supposed to help you heal, but it too needs to be discontinued close to surgery.
I'm desperate to get my health back again! One more period to go. I'm so thrilled that it will be the last one.
One last thing to avoid getting sick...drink lots of liquids. Hopefully we'll all stay healthy!

Zicam to the rescue!
It's great that you are all being so careful about staying well...If you DO start to feel sick--RUN to the nearest drug store/grocery and get Zicam! My favorite is the throat spray. I've been using it for at least 5 years and it's knocked out almost every cold I've (almost) gotten. It's amazing. Also, I take a Lysine tablet every day (500mg)--it's an anti-viral. So most of the time, I don't even catch the colds going around (and I'm a teacher...I used to get EVERYTHING). Hugs to all sisters--especially other Ladies-in-waiting!
