Hysterectomy in 5 days and scared

I have never had surgery before and I am scared to death. My stomach hurts and I con't sleep. My husband doesn't understand and there is no one else to talk to.

Hysterectomy in 5 days and scared

I have my surgery in two days and 9 hours. I too was petrified to have surgery. I updated my will, wrote letters to my children preparing for the worst. But today I awoke feeling unbelievably calm.

The waiting is the worst part. Try to keep yourself as busy as possible for the next five days to keep your mind occupied.

If you are having second thoughts, maybe it would be best to get a second opinion or delay surgery for a while until you are comfortable with the decision.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

Yep, the waiting is terrible! I agree that keeping busy is a good idea. Get things organized, cleaned, etc., and of course try to do some things you enjoy.

Everyone is scared, believe me! But, you'll get through everything just fine. Look at all the ladies here who came through with flying colors -- you will, too!!!

We'll all be with you in spirit -- and here 24/7 if/when you need us!

Good luck with everything! You'll do great!!!!

Hi a1auditor!

The feelings you describe are very common...so common, in fact, that there is even an article about it in our Pre-Op Articles archive. It was written based on sentiments shared through the years by members of Hystersisters.com. Do yourself a favor and "take a read" here:

Coping With Pre-Op Anxiety & Fear

I'm sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery!

Hysterectomy in 5 days and scared

Have faith everythign will be over before you know it. i had a hyster in June 2006. Besides the gas pains in the hospital after surgery the only experience I did not like was the two weeks before my sixth week of healing. Everything starts pulling back into place. The gas pains and some healing was the only discomfort for me. As I look back on that, that wasn't too bad. The surgery and everything else went perfect. Just be ready for some rest.

s I am right there with you on the fears and anxieties. I haven't really had a good night sleep in years, so I'm not sure if that is a problem. Nov 9th is my surgery date also. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Gulp! Read your post ... 5 days and scared.. then noticed you go the day after me that means only 4 days for me! Oh man.

Well... at least the wait is almost over, for both of us. Since I will be going the day before you, I will say it now. Best wishes for a quick and uneventful trip to the castle, and a speedy, easy recovery.

I'm scared too. Only 2 days to go & I seem to have accomplished everything that I thought would keep me busy. I was doing pretty good until my pre-op appointment earlier this week & I've been sliding downhill ever since. Today I wondered if I was rushing into this & all of a sudden I'm having some bad pain...guess it's a reminder?!?

I can't wait for this to be over!

Thoughts and prayers are with you....hang in there!!!

Hysterectomy in 5 days and scared

We were all there once...scared and pre op. Good news is those of us post op have lived to tell the tale.

We often fear what we don't know. I am sure that the nurses will be treating you well. Take a support person with you. Ask any questions you need to. I actually asked to talk directly to my doctor. They said he was already in there and I couldn't and when I said I was scared and wanted to talk to him....guess what he came to my bedside and reassured me.

I didn't feel anything...no iv's , no cath's and I can't even remember getting wheeled into the OR..what a blessing.

One tip is to ask the Asesthia DR for stuff for nausea before surgery especially if you have GERD. There are things they can give you. My worse fear was I was going to throw up afterwords. After I discussed this fear post op to the Anesthia staff they fixed me up wth some Pepcid and some IV stuff and I never threw up...not once.

Instead of worrying the last weekend before mine I gave myself a party. Had all the girls over night and we scrapbooked and laughed. The next day I was on liquid and they took me to a soup resteraunt so I cook DRINK my lunch and then we went shopping. I was so tired by the time I got home that night I did my PREOP and fell fast asleep. Didn't have time to stress anymore. The next morning I wasn't due to go in till 3pm..so I called a 10am and asked if the doctor was running on time...they said..he was EARLY and if I could get there PRONTO I could go in at noon. I ended up going straight there from waking up and showering....again no time to bite any fingernails.

Remember...we are all going to be here to support you.
God Bless all your preop sisters.
Trish
