Hi,

My doctor wants me temporarily off estrogen after surgery. She suggested Effexor, and antidepressant to help with hot flashes and other symptoms. I'm kind of scared to take something that impacts my brain chemistry. I was on Zoloft years ago for a week for PMS and I didn't like it at all! Has anyone else heard of this?

Hi. I can not have any form of HRT as my hysterectomy was because I had endometrial cancer. My family doctor recommended effexor and said it was very mild and just helps with anxiety more than being a strong anti-depressant. I looked it up on their website and, if I need it, I would consider taking this as it is very mild.

So far, I have not had any menopausal symptoms so I feel very blessed.

Good luck with your surgery.

I was put on exffexor about 2 weeks ago. I am also on Videlle patch. Even with the patch I was still not able to sleep and was having these rages. I do still have bothog my ovaries. Anyway, ever since I have been takin the exffexor I can tell a big difference. I can sleep again and no more rages (which my family loves). My dr told me the rages I was having he thought it was aniexty attackes. If you are not comfortable about taking talk some more with your dr.

Please request a different med. Effoxor is bad stuff, getting off of it is VERY difficult. Do a search for it on this site, you will find several post about it. There are too many other drugs to choose from to be put on it.
Good luck

I use effexor without any problems for anxiety but I don't believe it will help at all with hot flashes.

I am a breast cancer patient who cannot use hrt and treatment for cancer put me into immediate menopause. I used effexor with the chemo and had no problems with it. It completely took away the hot flashes and night sweats and when I came off the chemo I came off the effexor without any problems whatsoever. I just had my hyst. and so far so good no hot flashes or night sweats so far.

Hi - I was put on Effexor for menopause symptoms, and it was ok. The huge problem with it was my blood pressure. My GP said either get off effexor or go on high blood pressure pills. Well, I don't like the pill parade and now I"m weaning off the drug, which is extremly hard with all the side effects..like brain flashes, nausea, dizziness..you just feel like crap. Just watch the blood pressure, you don't want to stroke out. Good luck

I know nothing about efexor for the hot flushes and other menop. symptoms but I work in phcy and I issue it a lot. Reading up in the MIM's the use is for "Serotonin and noadrenaline reuptake inhinitor and major depression" . One of the most important things to remember about taking such a drug like this is you start aff on a small a dose and work up and when you are coming off if - if you do- you must come off on a reducing dose, as the doctor orders of course. but you should never stop imediately can cause dizziness, etc.
Good Luck. I have take anti depressants and re adjusting the brain is not so bad in my experience it helped!! this is just my views as I am not a professional always take the advice of your doctor or pharmacist

Thanks for your replies. Tina, I appreciate the feedback about blood pressure. MIne goes sky high on birth control pills. I don't want to have to worry about it again. I think I'm not going to try it. I'm very careful about prescription drugs. I ended up in the ER twice because of side effects of blood pressure drugs.
