Travel - What Do You Think?

My Family Celebrates Thanksgiving At The Coast Which Is About A 4 1/2 Hour Drive. We Would Leave On Wednesday, Spend The Night And Come Back On Thursday. Wednesday I Will Be 2 Weeks Post-op. As Far As How I Feel, I Thought I Was Doing Well Until Thursday. I Started Having Pain When Urinating. Friday Morning It Hurt To Pee. I Self Medicated And Took A Macrobid. I Laid Around All Day As I Felt Like I Had The Flu. By Friday Night Temp Was 100.8 And Extreme Pain When Peeing. Also My Incision From Lavh On Rt. Side Was Red And Slightly Tender. Doc On Call Said They Would Need A Urine Sample And Since I Took The Macrobid It Could Mask The Problem. She Said I Could Come To The Hospital Last Night Or Wait Until This Morning. Dh Was On A Field Trip With My Daughter And Hospital Is 30 Miles Away. This Morning When I Got Up I Could Pee A Little And It Was Not As Bad As Thursday But Still Pretty Bad. After I Got Out Of The Shower I Realized My Incision On Rt. Side Was Draining. I Went To The Hospital For Both. After Being Cathed Twice, Pelvic Exam (oh My Gosh It Hurt) And Blood Drawn The Diagnosis Was Uti And Cellulitis Of Incision. I Was Placed On Cipro And Percocet. Now With All Of That Being Said - Should I Travel? Please Give Me Your Opinions. Thanks And Have A Great Saturday Night.

I think that with the recovery problems you've described above, you need to ask your doctor about traveling so soon post op. I hope you feel better soon.

I agree about asking your dr.

You might feel well enough to travel by Thanksgiving but I wouldn't have attempted it. I was still uncomfortable at two weeks post op. I wouldn't have liked to try to sleep in someone else's house. It seems like two weeks is when insomnia, night sweats and all that other stuff set in.

I'd check with doc. Driving that far may not sound so bad, but you're sitting in the same position for a long time, and URI is nothing to sneeze at.

If you could LAY down the whole way, maybe you could rest there, and take it very easy.

Hi Amelia,

Sorry but I wouldn't even contemplate a long journey this soon without your problems. I had a long trip for my FIL's funeral 3.5 months post op and I was so sore after it. Check with your doctor but I would really consider what your body has been through.

Take care....Karen

I'm w/ everyone else, I'd stay home for Thanksgiving. There's no way I'd survive that drive at 2 weeks out if it were me. I was 6 weeks post op and went to the beach (12 hour drive) and I was very sore! I cannot imagine what 2 weeks would be like ..even just for 4 hours.

I'm coming up on 3 wks and usually travel to my mom's for Thanksgiving (3hrs away) I know I can't handle it.after 30 mins in a car I'm sore. I'm not even cooking Thanksgiving. I ordered from fresh direct to avoid all that work.Too tiring.I'm with the other ladies.

Amelia,
I have to say that I agree with the other ladies too. I was sore after just a short ride in the car at two weeks post op and I didn't have the complications you are having. You should probably run it by your doc and see what he says. You only have one chance to heal right so be very careful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Amelia, I had my surgery same day as you and ventured out for the 1st time today... that involved a 15 minute drive to a nursery, a 10 min visit there, a trip to the fruit market and lunch at Hungry Jacks... a total time away from home of less than 2 hours. I am so exhausted and sore. Please reconsider, I'm realising this surgery takes a serious toll on the body.

That sounds like you would really be pushing yourself. I think even if you made it there, I would assume that you would have no energy left to enjoy yourself and then turning around around and driving 4.5 hours again would be miserable.

Add to that the complications you are having and that could be bad. I would hate to be that far from home and trying to find medical care if things got worse. I know how important family get togethers and traditions are, but it will be worse on everyone if you end up hospitalized trying to make it.
