Black Cohosh

This has probably been asked a million times, but I was having trouble searching for it so I'll ask again if you all don't mind. Has anyone tried black cohosh for any length of time? I was wondering if it improves symptoms like insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, and nightmares. I am not on any type of HRT now.

Hi Donna

Check out the No Hormone Desert Oasis if you are not on any HRT. I posted a link to an article about black cohosh (I use it and am very happy with the results). Also do a search using the search button at the top of the page as there has been many conversations about this supplement. Check with your Dr. about taking it to be sure it is safe.

Black Cohosh

Thank you for your replies. I have checked out both the article and the thread. I think I might try it. I kept both ovaries during my TAH but think they are not working correctly (don't think they were working BEFORE the surgery) as I've had all the symptoms I mentioned above for several months and they seem to be getting worse. I see my doctor on Tuesday so I'll ask him about testing and black cohosh and see what he says.

Black Cohosh

Donna,
I didn't keep my ovaries, and am on hrt. While I am finally starting to find my balance, I was still having a bit of trouble with hot flashes so I added black cohosh. They've gotten much better.

I also used black cohosh about a year ago when I got major and ran out of my hrt. I made it thru the week with minimal symptoms.

Black Cohosh

PLEASE REMEMBER!!! Ask your DD before taking any natural remedies! Some people can be deathly allergic to them, or they can interact with other medication you take and cause serious side effects. Some act as blood thinners so if you are already taking something that does this you can possibly bleed internally.

Just because something is "natural" and sold over the counter, doesn't mean it is without hazard. ALWAYS ask your DD first and tell him what you are taking - EVERYTHING you are taking, including vitamin supplements!

Sorry to preach, but I had a friend end up in intensive care because of "natural" supplements!

Black Cohosh

Hi Donna,
I kept my ovaries too, and began getting hot flashes mainly at night. I found that the Black Cohosh really helped with the problem, almost eliminating the hot flashes.
Sincerely,
Carole

Black Cohosh

Thanks for the information and the warning. Fortunately I am not on any medication although I do take a low dosage multivitamin and calcium, and I do plan to ask my doctor on Tuesday when I see him.
