Post-Op Dry Throat / Cough

Since coming home from the castle, I get an annoying dry "catch" in my throat that causes awful coughing spells. I try to contain it so it almost sounds like I'm laughing to myself when I'm really in distress. It happens most often when I lay down. I drink tons of water, have herbal throat drops & ice chips always ready. I go to sleep with the throat lozenges scattered near my pillow so I can grab one when I wake up with a coughing fit. This isn't allergy or cold related. I'm thinking it's related to the surgery breathing tubes. Any other ideas would be appreciated - don't want to pop anything after all that's been done. Thanks so much for any similar experiences or ideas!

Obviously, check with your doctor, but it sounds very much like you're suffering with post-intubation symptoms. Some people have problems and some don't. I was told to expect a sore throat or cough, but I was fine. It all depended on how easily the tube was inserted, how it lay, what it rubbed against, etc ...

It should fade pretty quickly but have a word with your doctor if you're at all concerned.

I had a great anestheologist who explained presurgery that I might have a sensation of a scratchy throat after my surgery..and I sort of feit like I was getting a cold..lasted 4-5 days and cleared up. Sash
