Hi

Sorry you are in so much pain. I do not regret my hysto at all. I kept my ovaries because they were healthy too. I haven't had extreme menopause symptoms like many women have, and I attribute some of that to my ovaries still helping to a degree. I do not have my cervix and am not sure of the pro's and con's of keeping that.

Is there a family history of ovarian problems?
Each of must make a decision that works for us, but if they are healthy, and can possibly still help, why remove them?

Good Luck with everything!

Keep ovaries & cervix?

Have you had a second opinion regarding having a hyst? There can be pros and cons with a hyst, just as with any other surgery. It is a major irreversible surgery that can have long last effects on a woman.

Here are a couple articles regarding ovaries and the cervix:
Keep Cervix?
Keep Ovaries?
Keep Ovaries? Keep one or both?

The cervix is actually the bottom portion of your uterus. Keeping the cervix and your ovaries can result in mini periods so you may wish to read about them as well: Mini Periods.

My cervix was removed because of endo. I kept my ovaries because of my age and for the benefit of my overall health.

You can read more about adeno in the resource database: Hyster Sisters' Endo/Adeno Resources.

Do weigh the pros and cons for you. We each have different health needs so there is no one size fits all solution. And there is no way to know prior to surgery if you will be one that ends up with complications and long term problems or not. I never expected to have an extended hospital stay and a 6 months recovery, that is for sure!

Many best wishes to you and I hope you are able to find support and information to help you with your decision here on the site!

Keep ovaries & cervix?

Hi DaisyDimple,

I kept my cervix and ovaries and I am still very glad I did. I have never regretted the decision. My 1st Dr. wanted to do a TAH and remove everything. My 2nd Dr. recommended a LSH and he suggested I keep my ovaries and cervix since they were healthy.

Why remove healthy body parts?? I agree. Some Drs want to remove healthy organs because of ~what might~ instead of looking at a Hyster Sister's long term health. Newer studies are showing that the ovaries secrete important hormones well into menopause and the hormones are *free*.

Sending Best Wishes~

Mary

DiasyDimple

Once your Cervix and ovaries are healthy I would suggest that you kept them intact.
I had very large fibroids, did my surgery August 3, 2006 and to date I am just enjoying life, I feel great.
But Doctor is wonderful, she insisted in me keeping my cervix, and my ovaries.

All the best.

Keep ovaries & cervix?

I had an LSH and kept ovaries and cervix. I've never had an abnormal pap and I have PCOS, but my ovaries are healthy. I don't regret leaving the things that were left...I've already noticed that I'm not having some of the pain that I was having on almost an every day basis. I had fibroids and now that the stinkin' fibroid ridden uterus is gone...i'm so thankful that it has alleviated some of my pain.

Keep ovaries & cervix?

I kept my cervix and ovaries - hysterectomy done 12/1/04. There is no history of ovarian cancer in my family, and there was no need not to keep my cervix. 2 years out I am healthy and happy. No premature menopause, still have to have paps but it really doesn't bother me. What does matter is the bleeding is over forever, I feel great, energy back. I didn't want to give up the ovaries as there wasn't anything wrong with them. Good luck!
