Pain Control

I am at my 2 week mark today.
I called my Dr. and asked for a refill on my pain meds and I was told that I should not be in any pain!
I am still in pain, it is not as bad as it has been and it is getting better, but I am still in pain and she made me feel well like crying!
I have four young kids and as hard as I try setting all day it is just not something that I can do. I also had a house full of people for the weekend because of Thanksgiving and I think that I just did to much.
I told her this and she said to just relax and to try over the counter meds.
Am I alone? I felt like a addict seeking drugs.

Pain Control

I don't think you're alone, but it sounds like you might be doing too much out of necessity. I'm at 2 weeks, and Motrin works the best for me as it's an anti-inflammatory. You didn't say what kind of hyst you had or exactly what kind of pain you're experiencing....an ice or cold pack on my incision helps a lot to relieve pain as well.
I don't sit around well either, and it actually hurts much MORE to try to sit rather than lie down. I hope this helps some.

best wishes

Pain Control

Don't feel like an addict. I had a TVH (an "easier" hyst.) and had to take prescription strength off and on for about 3 1/2 - 4 wks. I too have small children and know that you aren't doing anything that you don't HAVE to do at this point. It's impossible to do nothing with kids and a family. You should try to relax more and take it easy as much as possible. Don't be so hard on yourself. There are lots of us out there that find OTCs just don't cut it. I am assuming you were probably in pain prior to surgery too so your body may have built up a little tolerance to pain meds. Hang in there. Good luck and call again tomorrow if you're still hurting.

I understand how you feel too. I had my TAH on Nov. 13th and there are days I donn feel as well. I wouldnt describe mine as pain, but just discomfort. It does sound as if you may have overdone it a bit. I agree with DiMo, motrin or another anti-inflammatory does work. Hang in there!!!

I feel real sleepy today. I took the kids to school and I think I am going to try to get some sleep.

Pain Control

I was still on prescription at 4 weeks. Now it has been 5 1/2 weeks and yesterday I took some. I still have the most uncomfortable feeling in my stomach, like there are bricks or knots in there and my whole stomach hurts to even a gentle touch. I had a tav and my incision was the least of my pains through this whole thing. Just rest when you need it!! I am active also and still after an outing or some housework I feel crappy and just rest. You are not alone!!

Pain Control

I had a TAH/BSO on Nov. 7 and can certainly relate to feeling like an addict needing pain meds. I was able to get a refill on my pain meds when they ran out, but have only used them for bedtime so that I can sleep pain free. During the day, I rely on Advil and ice packs. I also use a heating pad for my back when it starts hurting from sitting so much. I notice that my pain is usually worse if I have overdone it. That's when I take some Advil, grab an ice pack, and lay on the couch.

Pain Control

I made an appt. with my general Dr. for today to have him look at my incision it is infeacted and they put my on antibotics for that and they want to check it. I told him that I needed more pain meds and the OB said that I should not have anymore pain and my general Dr. said (how would he know is he you!) He made me feel alot better. But I am off to see him now.

My TAH was Nov. 13 - I used Ibuprofen for a couple of days after I was released from the hospital and that's it. I've been very fortunate though to be able to take it easy and don't have young children to take care of. If I did, I think it would be very difficult! Just do your best to get as much rest as you can and don't over do -- you'll be amazed at the things you can do without if you really try. The small stuff doesn't matter at the end -but you do and you need to take care of yourself. Be well.

I believe that's way too much work for a person recovering from major surgery. In fact, it sounds like a strain even for someone who is 100-percent healthy and fit. Like you, I had an abdominal surgery and at two weeks post-op I was just beginning to drive again and live somewhat of a normal life.

Please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and -- It will benefit your recovery in the long run.

Many s and Best Wishes,
