I am 4 weeks post op and car rides are still taxing on me (I feel every bump in the road). I leave next Friday to visit my Aunt who lives 4 1/2 hours away. She is like a mother to me and my uncle (who was like a father) was killed in May. Christmas is going to be extra rough on her this year and there is no way that I will cancel my annual trip. Any suggestions on what I can do to make the car ride more bearable?

Have you tried placing a firm pillow between you and your seat belt? I still drive and ride that way. I still feel some bumps but it is more bearable. You can try sitting on a firm pillow to cushion you too. Just a thought.
Im sorry to hear about your Uncle. Although this will be a difficult holiday for you and your family, it will be a special one being together. God Bless you!

Thanks! I use a pillow between me and the seatbelt, but have not thought of sitting on one. I will definitely try that.

This trip is going to be tough in more ways than one. My uncle was the one who wrapped his arms around us all. His family was his life. We all feel lost without him here, but are trying our best to go on with life as that is what he would have wanted.

I think you are a wonderful person to be there for your loved ones. At 3months out I had to attend a funeral that was 3 states away. So I understand how you feel about the road trip. Maybe these suggestions can help.
..Take your meds in plenty of time to kick in during the first hour of driving. Don't take them right before you go because that's a little too late.
..What you don't have any meds? Call your dr and ask for enough for the trip there and back.
..Pull over and take a break. My DH and I drove along for as long as I was comfortable and then pulled off and stayed a night at a hotel. This helped greatly. If your trip isn't that long, then please just pull over (we actually stopped at a mall) and walk just a little, rest, lay down in the back sit and rest for 1 hour while DH eats his lunch in the front seat. This can help alot.
..Listen to an audio recording of a story. Or better yet a comedian. My DH and I listened to a very old Bill Cosby "record" and it kept my mind off the bumps and helped me stay relaxed.
..Pillows, pillows, pillows. Put them anywhere you can think. Under your feet to prop them up,
under your hips, under the seatbelt as mentioned before, under your arms if you have no armrests, or under your neck.

I hope that some of these suggestions will help. You take care and have happy holidays!
