Its nice to know Im not alone I will have my hyster on June 13th and feel the same way you do..scared to be put to sleep. Even though Ive had several surgeries in the past, this time seems so terrifiying. I do know in the past drinking Mint tea and other things to detox my system helped get me past the after surgery "funk" that the anesthetic left. I have been trying to look at it as getting some "real sleep" something I havent been doing well. Im sure we'll both do fine and wake up to the begining of a new life for ourselves. I've also been doing some relaxation/meditation therapy, soft music ,candles, etc. which I will continue afterwards, dont know if this helps you any but thought you would want to know you're not the only one that feels this way

Hi Leehammer2 Welcome to Hyster Sisters.

I was also oh so scared of not waking up!!! I even considered writing a note to my dh and for my children It's very normal, believe me.

This is MAJOR surgery, and it's normal that we're worried. However, I don't know anyone who went crazy afterwards. While some of the ladies who are thrown in surgical menopause and not doing well with HRT or unable to take them, for whatever reason, do report mood swings, it is not the same as being crazy.

Most of us only report that we feel a whole lot better than pre-op.

The waiting is the worst part. For you, the wait is almost over. We'll be with you every step of the way.

Word of caution: be careful with taking herbs, vitamins and meds, natural or not, so close to your surgery. Some of them could post-pone your surgery or cause serious complications during surgery or your recovery. Be sure to clear any of these things with your doctor.

Best wishes.

General anesthesia is really, really safe. However, if the idea still freaks you out, or if you're touchy about possible nausea and brain fog afterward, ask if you can have your surgery done with a spinal or epidural. I've have one surgery recently under a general, and my hyst with a spinal, and I'd choose the spinal again any day.

Here's my very long post with all the details about my TAH:

I don't know where that "women going crazy" rumor started, but if you start polling all the very healthy, sane, strong older women you know, you'll probably find a good number of them have had a hyst. There must have been one Sister who shot up a whole town in the early 1900s, and it made a big impression on the national psyche. All the Sisters I know are healthy as horses, and as stable as they come. You'll be fine.

How is the epideral compared with being put out....I'm scared to death of being put out. My gynecologist said I could talk to the anesthesiologist about the choices, but I'm nervous about making the right one. I had ankle surgery with an epiderual and was feeling great in the recovery room. I usually get nauseous and feel like I'm being suffocated when being put to sleep.

Jodycolleen: If you do a "Search" on "anesthesia" or "epidural" or "spinal" you will notice that this subject has been discussed often. You might find the answers you are searching for.

anesthesia anxst & June 12

Hi, gang!
I am also due for my TAH on June 12th!
But I feel very badly for all of you that are so upset and concerned about the anesthesia part. I don't know if there is anything that I can say to alleviate that , but I hope you each find the peace that will make you comfortable with what is a very safe procedure.

I have had innumerable day surgeries the last year ,where I was totally put under, and you probably will find it odd to think that the anesthesia part is the part that I actually look forward to. I just love that fuzzy feeling! ( No I am no sort of a druggie and I am even a bit of a control freak ,too. ) Years ago,I used to get sick from the anesthesia, but I always mention that to the anesthesiologist and sure enough whatever they do , I've never been sick since!

I do wish there is something I could say to alleviate fears for all of you!... but I'll be thinking peaceful thoughts for all of you.
All my best!(special hugs to my June 12 th co-princesses -in- waiting!)
