unique situation: keep uterus after ovaries removed?

Hello,
I am new here and have a unique situation so I am not really sure where to put this thread. My story starts with the removal of a dermoid cyst along with my left ovary at age 24. Since then I have had two children. My dr. now says I have a dermoid cyst on my right ovary and should have it removed. If he has to remove the ovary he said there is no point in leaving the uterus. I am not really sure what to make of that. Does my uterus have any function after the removal of both ovaries? Should I keep the cervix (if possible)? I am more than confused right now about this. Any advice or experience with this is greatly appreciated.

Hi Kallco!

My only advice is to find an excellent GYN surgeon and get a second opinion. Good luck.

I would keep it if it isn't causing you any problems. Why have the increased recovery time and possible risks?

Tough call.
With the removal of the 2nd ovary, you'll already be put into surgical menopause. The uterus really serves no function at that point and who knows whether or not you'll have problems later.
You may want to consider leaving the cervix if you've had no problems there. However, if you choose to keep the cervix you can't have a vaginal hyst. which often means a shorter recovery.
A 2nd opinion for this is an excellent idea!

Hi Kallco,

I am sorry you are facing surgery and this big decision. One thing that comes to mind for me in your situation might be the use of hormone replacement therapy after your ovaries are removed. Women without a uterus can often use just estrogen, but because estrogen can effect the uterine lining - most women who retain their uterus will also need to add progesterone to their HRT to keep the lining healthy and lower their chances of developing endometrial cancer. Asking your physician about HRT options is probably a good thing to add to your list of questions in this situation. I might add that even some women without their uterus benefit from the use of progesterone - but not everyone can tolerate it. (Myself included.)

I think getting multiple opinions before your surgery is a great idea. Once you know all the pros & cons it can help with this difficult decision. This article, Keep Cervix? can be found in the Pre-op Articles along with other good Resources you find links for at the left of the page.

Good luck with your additional opinions and your decision, and please keep us posted on how things are going and what you decide.

Thinking of you and sending s,
Beth

I hadn't really thought of the cervix, and I know nothing of meds for hormones, I have a lot of research to do. I do know that the Dr. doesn't want to do the surgery laproscopically because he wants to save the ovary if at all possible. He said he will be better able to tell what could be saved of the ovary, if anything, by actually getting a good look at it. Thanks everyone!

I have gotten the second opinion, she agrees with the first, and says I am in good hands. The cyst is about 5cm so pretty substantial. Now hubby and I have to decide if we want a third child (if even possible) or if I should just have it taken care of immediately. Having to make this decision really stinks.

You're right, the decision does stink.

I had so many medical problems and knew my family was complete, that my hyst was sort of a 'no-brainer' ~ So, it surprized me after surgery when I found myself mourning the loss of my uterus. I later learned, here on HS, that those feelings are pretty common. Whether it's the dear (((sister))) who was unable to have children, or even a (((sister))) who has kids, closing that chapter in your life can be very difficult.

Thinking of you and sending s as you decide.
