I saw the gyn today...no bowel prep needed

I finally saw the surgeon today that is going to do the hyst. She told me about all the options. Birth control pills to shrink the fibroids, but I don't want to take any more pills. Then there was Uterine artery embolization, but she told me that it doesn't always work. Then there was the Laparoscopic supracervical hyst., and the Hystoscopic Resection of fibroid and the last was a total hysterectomy. Ovaries, cervix, uterus, everything out. It was a difficult decision. One procedure called for 2 surgeries, so I told her I didn't want that. The one she recommended was the Laparoscopic Surpacervical. I was almost going to go with it, but in the end I decided I wanted to have everything out at once. She said there was no reason I couldn't keep my ovaries and cervix, and she also told me the odds of getting cervical or ovarian cancer. And while the odds are in my favor that I won't get those types of cancers, she also told me that if I should get them, by the time it's found it's too late. So, after thinking and thinking I decided to have everything out and get it over with. I know I'll go into instant menopause, and that doesn't appeal to me, but she said I could try hormones for a while if the hot flashes were too bad and then slowly wean off them. My aunt had a hyst. a few years ago and the Premarin caused breast changes. So I'm going to try and go without the hormones. What I don't understand, though I'm grateful for, is that she said I won't need any bowel prep. I asked her twice and she said no, no prep except taking an antibiotic before the operation. I have one large fibroid and some small ones. My lab work came out good. I will meet the anesthesia dr. right before the operation, which will probably be in a few months. They are really booked up. She told me that the bowel preps were for people who had other, worse problems. So I am trying to make sense of it all. The drs. office is going to give me a call for another appt. because the other surgeon wants to meet me. I brought in all my meds. and they have to be checked to see if there is any form of aspirin in them. There shouldn't be. So, I hope I made the right decision. It was the most difficult decision of my life. Is there anyone else that never had to have the bowel prep? I'm really grateful about this. I just hope that later on they don't tell me they made a mistake and I do need the bowel prep. Now the hardest part, the waiting. That will get to me more than anything else will.

Well that is great news for you. I would be thrilled to be in your shoes without the bowel prep. I am not sure if that is totally right about the worse problems and bowel preps b/c I am having a TAH and I do not have any problems other than horrific periods that have gotten worse since my 3rd child. I was told they like the bowel prep b/c #1 they move the intestines, and if they nick the bowel a surgeon and fix it at that point b/c the bowel is empty. I do not know if this is all 100% true as I read this stuff on the internet, however I am jealous. I have to do the whole bowel prep, enema & douche thing. Lucky me.. Right?? LOL

Have a great day and ...... GO Buckeyes !!!!!!!

Good for you! I don't require the bowel prep and I'm having an SAH; possible TAH.

I did have to do it last week for an x-ray on my kidneys, but thank God, I don't have to do it again!

That is great that you don't have to do the bowel prep! I am with Tallison and have to do the same prep she does! YUCK! LOL! Good luck with your appointments with the surgeons. And yes, waiting is the hard part.

In a case like this where the bowel prep isn't recommended, would it be beneficial to do the liquid diet idea a day or two before, anyway, just to be on the safe side and for comfort for the patient?

Just wondering

You don't want to do anything your doc didn't tell you to do. They are expecting you to come in a certain way, whether that is doing a bowel prep or not. I wouldn't do something like that without talking to your doc first.

I don't understand the no need for the bowel prep either. I did ask her twice, maybe three times. And each time she said no. I hope she's right, but I was ready to go through the prep if I had to. I still have to see the other surgeon, so I'll see what that dr. says. I feel so relieved if it's true. I went through it once when I had my colonoscopy. Swallowing that Phospho Soda was horrid!!! Maybe the bowel prep has to do with each drs. preference and the location of the problem? I don't know. In the meantime, I'll probably have 2 or 3 more periods before the surgery. Which means they will be very heavy with a lot of cramps. Plus I've been ameic so I'll have to buy some more iron supplements. Hopefully I won't need them after the surgery. It was really a difficult decision to have them take out my ovaries and cervix. I did a lot of soul searching and if there is nothing wrong with them I can't see having them taken out. But on the other hand, I don't want problems down the road that could have been prevented now. Either way, it was a difficult decision. I don't want to go on hormone therapy. Heard too many bad things about it. I'll just have to wait and see how I feel after the surgery regarding the hrt. I'm not looking forward to instant menopause.

Does anyone feel really cold when their period comes? I get so cold. I can't describe it well, just that it's a type of cold feeling that goes right into my bones. I do get hot flashes and those get pretty hot, but my period is due in a few days and I am already feeling so chilly, even though I have a lot of warm clothing on. Sometimes I get so cold I"ll have to get under the blankets.
