Is everyone having general anesthesia?

I am considering an epidural rather than general anesthesia. Is anyone else doing this? I have had numerous surgeries and just hate the thought of being put to sleep ...again. Am I crazy?

There are ladies who do have an epidural during their hyst so this might be a possibility for you. But this is something you will have to double check with your doctor and anesthesiologist as not all doctors will do a hyst with an epidural.

Best wishes to you!

Is everyone having general anesthesia?

I am having general anesthesia. The thought of a needle being shoved into my spine just makes me cring! I didn't have an epidural with my kids, so I don't want one for surgery! lol! Just knock my butt out!

Thanks Weiser. The Dr. says that it is O.K. He said that 11 of the 12 anesthesiologists will do an epidural. I think that I may try it. I think that I will need a sedative coming my way. It is a tough decision.

You have a point (literally too). I never had an epidural, but I did have a spinal. I have time to think this through.
Thanks!

Is everyone having general anesthesia?

Hi

My surgery was last Thursday. When my ovary was removed earlier under just a general anesthesia, I woke in recovery in pain and was very groggy for hours. This time, with an epidural and a very light anesthesia to make me sleep, I woke in recovery mentally alert and in no discomfort at all.

I am recovering quickly, and feel part of the reason was the fact I was always in far less pain that my other operation.

Hope this helps you.

It does help...thanks!
I really want to use an epidural, but I don't want to lie there and listen to the entire surgery. My doctor offered a sedative, but a low dose of general may be the answer.

Is everyone having general anesthesia?

I'm having a general, which I prefer. I've handled it well in my past surgeries so I really don't have any qualms about it.

In fact, the thought of being even somewhat aware scares me more, not to mention getting that needle in the spine which I've never had.

This way, it seems like my surgery is done in seconds as I'm totally asleep for it.

So, is it up to your GYN or the anesthesiologist if they will do an epidural? I don't know if I would do it, but would definitely give it thought.

I had my pre-op the other day and asked my doctor about the general or epidural and he said general as I handled it well in the past. So I was relieved actually.
