Question - EI benefits EI benefits

Has anyone applied for and was covered for her hyster by EI's illness benefit? I just came back from my local EI office and got all the paperwork. (lots and lots of pages to fill out) Was there any problems? Did they balk about the surgery?

I'm really peeved that they pay 55% of my gross salary, but it's better than nothing.

Hi Laurasc, that's a good question. Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. I'm very lucky that we have sick days where I work and at the time of my hyst, I had over 125 sick days saved up, and I just used about 25 of them.

I have heard that there is such a thing as EI Sick benefits for people who are unable to work for a period of time due to injury or illness not covered by workers comp. As you know if you've had any dealings with government offices, nothing is really straightforward with those folks!

I'm sure that, after a lot of paperwork on your part, you will be approved to recieve benefits.

Good luck,

Laura

Well I did the research and apparently surgery is covered. What worries me is that this is in a sense an "elective" surgery and they may decide that it's not covered....especially considering that it's a hysterectomy. In my paper work I have (so far) not said that it's a hysterectomy, only surgery. But I suspect that they will want to know what and why.

55% is a pityful amount, but it's better than nothing and we really need my salary to make ends meet.

Thanks

Laura, I had sick leave by the time I had my hyst, but, 1 year ago, my DH was unable to work for over 30 days, due to illness. He had no sick leave at the time and applied for EI benefits. He received them, no problem. I think he didn't even have the 2 weeks penalty - or might have been only 2 weeks instead of 5 weeks - I forget. I know that we were very pleasantly surprised at how easy it all was.

I know that 55% is a bummer That's why a lot of couple can't take advantage of the new parental leaveL they can't afford 12 months at 55% of their salary.

Wishing you luck and, please, keep us posted on this issue.

Dany, the waiting period is 2 weeks...which is also a real drag. So what I'm trying to do is put aside enough money from my paycheques to cover the two weeks that I won't get paid. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll even be able to bank a little extra to make up the difference in the EI benefit.

Hey Cath, is the government looking for pediatric nurses?? I work in a pediatrician's office and the only thing I get is my paycheque. 75%, that's nice!

We are looking for a ton of nurses. Now whether or not you want to work for the Ministry of Correctional Services is another thing. I worked with the ministry for 13 years and still like my job. You probably would not find it to different the male offenders can be big babies as well LOL.

Talk to you all soon

Hi there,
I had TVH in Ontario in Jan2001. I was able to go on EI sickness benefits for my 8 weeks off work. All I was told at the EI office was to make sure all forms were filled and to have Dr put in approximate date of return to work. The waiting period was 2 weeks (no benefits) and it took about 5 weeks from surgery date to start receiving benefits. Here is the web site with more info.

Uhh...Correctional services? Uhh....no, I'm used to working with little babies...not big babies.

Thanks Melania, that's what I wanted to hear. I was so afraid that I would be refused because of the kind of surgery. One never knows what is going on inside the heads of the government.

Ah Come on Laura it would be fun.

We have been posting on a lot of the same threads though your hyst is 2 months before mine is scheduled.

See you around
