Heart over Head

My hyster is scheduled for February 13 - for a 8 cm fibroid that may (according to a transvaginal sonogram) be a sarcoma. I can't believe how emotional I am feeling! I am blessed to have 4 children, familiar with the realities of surgery (4 c-sections), and understand that I don't "need" my uterus. But I feel overwhelmed with grief and fear.

If fibroids are so rarely cancerous, why is this so frightening. I am angry at myself for not being stronger and more positive....

I think it's always frightening to be facing a surgery, and this one in particular, is symbolic of our fertility and womanhood. You are not alone is the grief and fear your are feeling, it's very normal to be feeling this way.

Do talk with your doctor about your fears. I did, and my doctor and his team were supportive and comforting when it came to understanding how frightened and emotional I felt.

It takes time to come to terms ....it's a process of healing not only physically, but emotionally as well.

Hang in there, and know there is always some here and an understanding

Oh, dear... I'd be worried about you if you weren't scared right now.

A hysterectomy is a very big deal. Your title says it all -- you know intellectually that you need the surgery, but your heart is having none of that. Instead, your is hurting and throwing your emotions into high gear.

You also have the fear of the possible sarcoma, and that is no small thing to try and deal with along with hysterectomy.

I agree that you should talk to your doctors about your fears. It'll probably be pretty obvious on Tuesday that you're anxious -- make sure the and know why so that they can give you additional support.

All my best wishes to you and I hope you have the best possible outcome.
