Guidance needed re: Hyperplasia w/ Atypia

Thanks so much for all the wonderful advice and information in these forums! I am 44 and have had irregular (none for 2-3 months, then heavy and regular for some months) over the past 2 years. OB/GYN had me take Provera (which made me feel awful emotionally) when I didn't get a period every 4 weeks. After too many months of doing this off and on, I asked for End. Biopsy. It came back as complex hyperplasia w/ mild atypia. My OB GYN wants me to try 3 months of Prometria (a 'natural' progesterone Rx) and re-test. After seeing that a good percentage of atypia actually has cancer already existing concurrently and with a TREMENDOUS amount of familial history of endometrial, colon, stomach, and prostate cancer going back 3 generations, I plan to get a second opinion from a Gyn Oncologist and am leaning very strongly towards hysterectomy. I have 2 teenage daughters and I feel I can't be too cautious at this point in my life. Even with a D&C, my understanding is it could miss underlying cancer and also this seems to be an ongoing/progressive condition that will require close monitoring at best. Also am leaning towards genetic testing for Lynch Syndrome given so much cancer in the family. Thoughts on my plans/conclusions so far?

Hyperplasia w/ Atypia

to Hystersisters and the forum no one really wants to join. Glad you already have found useful information here.
Re taking meds to turn back complex hyperplasia, at least the 2 gyn/oncs I spoke with said they only use it for women who want to try to have a child immediately but even then strongly recommend a hysterectomy and immediately after the birth. They also said the odds for any reversal go down in women over 40/45.
Your plans to see a gyn/onc are right on the mark. Also pls don't hesitate to get second or even third opinons if you believe you may gain more info to make an informed decision. I don't have specific experience with genetic testing but other women here have had genetic testing and I am sure they will come along.
I know you will make the right and best decision for yourself once you get all the facts concerning your particular issues and case. I hope you soon find a gyn/onc you have confidence in and have good rapport with him/her. Pls let us know how thing go.
s,
peggiesue

Hyperplasia w/ Atypia

Hi,
I think a second opinion with a gyno/onc is a necessity.
I started with endo biopsy of hyperplasia with atypia.
My gyno then did D&C which changed to stage one cancer. I had TAH/BYSO and recovered nicely.
One year after operation I went for colonoscopy, just because I was 52 and had been busy with all the endo appts. and follow up. Surprise I had stage 3 colon cancer.
I am doing well now.
After bowel resection and six months of chemo I went for genetic testing and do have Lynch syndrome.
They are now recomending women with this genetic defect get preventitive TAH/BYSO when done with child bearing. The endrometial cancer is highly curable because it has symptoms and gets early action. But this defect also has a higher risk of ovarian cancer which is harder to detect and treat.
Do think about your medical insurance status and if you want life insurance or nursing home insurance, buy these before testing because rates can go way up with a positive test result.
I went through testing because of my children, after my positive result my daughter was tested and did not have this defect. My son is 24 and did not want testing but his highest risk would be colon cancer, which would be watched for with colonoscopy at earlier age.
Best of luck to you,
Janet
