questions about weight loss & heavy periods
Hello Ladies. Thank you for this board, where we can ask our most intimate questions with out judgement.
I don't have a hyst scheduled, and I don't know if it is even in my immediate future. I just know that I am tired of living like this... about 1-2 times per year, I have a period that lasts for EVER. One time it was +100 days. This time it has been since Jan. 1. My doc was never able to decide why my period wasn't going away when I had the +100 day period. This time it has been different though. I had an ultrasound and they found a cyst on my ovary. I knew that I was tender and that my periods have been painful, but I didn't know why and was too stupid to question it. Ya see, I have recently lost 126 pounds and I don't know my own body at this point. I don't know what is normal for someone at my new size and what is abnormal... But I did know that an 8 week period is not normal. I have been put on BC pills to stop the bleeding, but it still hasn't completely stopped. I am on week 2. It is no longer bright red, it's brown, but still there... grrrrr. Would the cyst be causing all of the bleeding or not? Shouldn't the pill have stopped the bleeding by now? I asked my Doc and she said that I might have breakthrough bleeding for 12 more weeks... 12 weeks??? I don't like that answer. I have an appointment with another Doc, but I can't see him until 3/13.
Another thing - my periods (when they were kind of normal) were 5-7 days and very painful and heavy. Is that something to be concerned about? Keep in mind, I have lost 126 pounds and when I was much heavier, I didn't have normal periods. They would be 3-5 days - 3-4x per year and they were light... Am I being petty? Do I just not remember what it is like to have a normal period? Sheesh - I am really frustrated.
Help!
Kari

questions about weight loss & heavy periods
Since your doctor does not have any answers for you, have you ever visited with another doctor to see if s/he would have a idea of what might be occuring? Sometimes another doctor may have an idea do to different training and see different issues in his/her medical practice.
You also might consider going to your GP and asking for his/her opinion and a referal to someone who might be able to help you.
Having chaotic periods can be very frustrating, but might not be a reason to have a hyst which is a major, life changing surgery.
I wish you the best and hope you can find a medical team to help you!

questions about weight loss & heavy periods
Kari, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy on Feb. 16 after frustrating years of abnormal periods. I never really complained about it to my GP but during a routine yearly they found out I was severly anemic, then an ultrasound to find fibroid tumors. I have lost 145 pounds since March 2005 and found my periods actually did get worse the more weight I lost which seemed odd to me but apparently the weight loss had nothing to do with the fibroids causing the problem. I hope you talk with your doctor and feel better.
