Pain Relief for TVH

I have seen posts about post-op medications for abdominal hyst.
but what did they give you girls that had a TVH? Someone said the other day when I was out that most abdominal patients get the pump, but not the vaginal patients. So what did most of you ladies get? I go for a TVH in less than a month.

Pain Relief for TVH

Hi, "Virginia Sis",

I had a morphine-type pain pump - it wasn't morphine, but something similar following my tvh. It didn't help with pain - made me sick. My dr had orders for me to have Torodol in my i.v. - that helped A LOT.

Good Luck

Pain Relief for TVH

I had a PCA pump for a day--I had Demerol & phenergan in mine because I had such severe nausea and vomiting in the recovery room (the surgery only took 45 minutes but I spent over 2 hours in recovery...thank goodness for Toridol).
The next day I went to pills & also got a prescription for that on discharge...Mepergan (Demerol & phenergan). That worked like a charm.
Good luck with your surgery.

Pain Relief for TVH

Hi Sheri, I didn't have a pump. I got toradol iv for pain. It's a non-steroidal, non-narotic, anti-inflammatory pain killer, doesn't cause nausea like morphine or demerol can. I got 4 doses of it then switched to motrin. Remember everybody's pain tolerance is different. I can actually say I didn't have pain with my surgery, just twinges. At home, I just had motrin. Wishing you a painfree recovery , Jan

Pain Relief for TVH

I have had 2 previous surgerys. The bladder surgery, I was really REALLY sick with. I got something for it in recovery and got 2-3 shots in my room over 24-30 hr. period. I was not just nauseated, I threw up 5 times or so. With the gallbladder laproscopy, they ran something for nausea during surgery in my IV. I was feeling so good I was talking too much, after the surgery, and got that wave of nausea. They gave me a shot and I never had anymore problems. Should I ask them to keep the phenergan running in my IV since I am prone to this? I really do not want to be sick with this and also wake up in a lot of pain.

Pain Relief for TVH

I had a Lap Assisted TVH/BSO on May 31 so will be 2 weeks post op tomorrow and doing GREAT! I feel better than I have in several years.

I had a morphine pump when I woke up in recovery. The nurse pushed it a couple of times and I was VERY sick!!! I have had this problem before (I've had 5 previous surgeries) so I pretty much knew I was going to be sick when I woke up. Not just nauseated either actually do throw up several times. They usually give me Phenergan for that and it usually does the trick.

I kept the pump on for a few hours but didn't use it because it was making me so sick. They finally switched it ( after I complained of being so sick) to a Demerol pump. I can't honestly say that it helped the pain that much but I guess it kind of took the edge off. I was also getting Phenergan I.V. when I asked for it.

After about 24 hours the pain wasn't so bad anymore and I started on Lorcet Plus pills which worked better than the Morphine or Demerol.

I took those for about 3 days at home then switched to Advil.
That worked very well and also helped with the swelling.

Hope everything goes great for you. Keep us posted!

Pain Relief for TVH

:muscle: I had the pump til the morning after surgery. Then I got a percocet, a prescription for more, and was told I could go home when I had eaten something solid and passed gas! I never had any pain as bad as the cramps I'd had every month, so I really didn't use the pump much, and I still have some pills left.

Good luck! It'll all be great!

Sheri,
I had my TVH on June 4, 2001. They gave me morphene through my IV after surgery. They sent me home with Percocet and told me to use Advil with that as needed. So far- So good!
Good luck and to you. Don't forget to drink lots of water when you take your meds
