Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

Hello there
I'm totally confused. I'm scheduled to have a hysterectomy after finding out after a D&C for polyp removal that I had simple non-atypical hyperplasia and lots of polyps which they removed. My mum had just died from cancer, I have a 6 yr old and I was terrified it would turn into cancer. The surgeon wasn't much help in my decision, I think he thinks I'm getting the hysterectomy because I have heavy periods and are consequently anaemic most of the time LOL. From what I've researched, it seems my response is over the top and I may be better off being monitored (u/sounds). Trouble is I can't get an appointment until 2 days before the op is on, which gives me little time to consider further after asking further questions. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
thanks,

Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

I'm sorry I can't help you with your specific questions, but hopefully someone will come along or a hostess will redirect you. I am sorry you are havingthis stressful situation. Is your appt scheduled? Is it with the doc who was little help again or a second opinion? I'm feeling for you and wish you the best.

Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

Hello Faithfirst and thanks for your kind wishes.
Have organised for another ultrasound and 2nd opinion before the scheduled op., so still may pull out at the last minute. Am thinking if the hyperplasia is due to lack of progesterone, they could trial me on that, rather than the hysterectomy. Funny thing is no-one has even explained to me why they think i had the polyps in the first place, or tested my hormone levels at all.
All the best, Lisa

Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

Hello lisa, there seems to be so much confusion on your part. Please make a list of your questions and take someone along with you for this next appt. They can help keep the disucssion on focus and also help remember/record the answers for you to refer to later. We ourselves are often emotionally involved with the discussion and don't 'hear' everything the first time. Insist on having answers to your questions. You must be informed before making decisions and you are right a hysterectomy is a BIG decision. Good luck.

Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

Lisa

Polyps are growths where they don't belong. You can get polyps in the colon as well as the uterus. They are not related to hyperplasia. But can become cancerous themselves.

I had both polyps and hyperplasia. They removed the polyps, and treated the hyperplasia with progesterone for 18 months. I entered menopause and was told everything was OK. 3 years later and a biospy revealed cancer. If you treat it with progesterone, make sure that you continue to have it checked regularly after they say it's fine. It is good you are seeing your doctor.

Best wishes.

Lyn

Polyps, non-atypical hyperplasia

Hi Lisa,
I had a polyp (normal tissue!) removed 4 years ago that recurred. Second D & C revealed it's return along with complex hyperplasia with atypia. Dr. offered me progesterone or hysterectomy. Took the progesterone route. Internist said to stop progesterone due to other probs and when I told gyn this, she said (on the phone mind you) that there is a better than 50% chance that I already have cancer! Made and apt with an recommended oncologist, he said, not to take the progesterone, get the hysterectomy and said there is no problem with me waiting until May (2 months school is over). So my hysterectomy is scheduled for May 15th. I asked LOTS of questions, found whatever I could about it online and then made my decision. So write down your questions, make sure you are happy with the responses, or go to another doctor! From what I've found out, from all the info. is that the presence of atypia in the pathology report is the automatic hysterectomy word. Otherwise they say you can do the hormone route with follow ups. Good luck!
