bladder feels like it doesn't empty

I am 5 weeks post op and I have just realized where the pain is coming from. My bladder feels bruised and I am in pain. It is not a sharp pain, but more like alot of bruising. I start peeing and everything is ok, then 2 or 3 seconds and wow the discomfort is unbearable..... Then when I am through, I feel bruised from the inside all the way out.

I have been treated three weeks ago for a suspected UTI, but the urinalysis come back negative. There isn't any burning, but a whole lot of discomfort. So much, that I do not want to pee. I am up all night peeing and then trying to recover from the experience in order to go back to sleep.

The only relief is to get in the bath of warm water and let the pee come out when it can. A little at a time.

After my op, I had cathater for 5 days because I could not pee on my own. Is it possible that my bladder still will not work efficiently and empty on its own?

bladder feels like it doesn't empty

Hi msmagee,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having so much trouble emptying your bladder.

I'd like to encourage you to keep "bugging" your doctor until you find some relief from this. You may have already read the article called Urinary Tract Infection? - it looks like you have many of those symptoms. It would be worth getting re-checked because sometimes a UTI doesn't show up in testing right away. Also, if they can rule out a UTI for sure, they can start looking to see what the problem really is. You deserve to understand what is happening and to have relief from it.

Will you please let us know what you find out?

Thank you for replying to my post, and so fast. I really needed a kind word. I am not coping very well at all. I cannot get past the constant all day pain...

msmagee, you might also want to ask your doctor about 'residuals'. It does sound as if your bladder may not be emptying efficiently enough. OR even if it does empty, the pain is not normal. I second the motion to ask your doctor for more help.

I am having some of the same issues, although not as severe or constant. But the feeling of pressure is amazingly powerful. Let me know what your doc says. Mine checked for UTI and it was negative (after being cultured), so I have just chalked it up to healing....

When I first had my surgery I felt that way, too, but it got better over time. I hope this is the case for you, too. For me it was a couple of months before things started to return to normal.
