Hair Loss Anyone?
I'm on Estradiol patch .5 and had tah/bso January 26. Since all of that I have had tremendous hair loss. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm also way overdue for a follow up with my endocrinologist. I've been diagnosed with subclinical hyperthyroidism, untreated and just being monitored, but maybe it's just the thyroid acting up. Any insight would be helpful.
Hugs to all

Hair Loss Anyone?
Hi Kozzie!
It's not unusual to experience hair loss in the early months post-hysterectomy from anesthesia and the stress of surgery but of course there can be other causes. It's definitely worth discussing the problems you are having with your doctor so the cause can be determined and treated, if necessary.

Hair Loss Anyone?
I am experiencing hair thinning around the edges. I just made an appointment with my dermatologist to see if there is something that can be done to remedy the problem. I had a TAH in November, and I am not taking any hormonal drugs because I am not comfortable with what my previous physician prescribed for me (Premarin); I don't know if this is contributing to my hair thinning. I am changing gynecologist, and if there is a definite need for me to be on hormonal drugs, I hope she can steer me toward the right one.

Hair Loss Anyone?
I had (have) major hair loss. I have been taking thyroid for years, but this amount of hair loss was much greater than that I experienced with hypothyroidism. This article helped explain some of the causes:

I just recently bought some pre-natal vitamins to take to try to build my system up. Surgery and all the drugs appear to be hard on the body. I hope that it clears up for you soon.

Hair Loss Anyone?
Any time my hormone levels change I experience more hair strands coming out in the shower and in my brush. The worst was about 6-9 months postop when I had a really major fallout. My hair was very long then and I was so discouraged I had it cut short. That was a big mistake because it's taken what seems like an eternity to grow back. I still have a lot of shedding now and then, especially when I make any changes to my HRT, but then it usually calms down. Thank God I was blessed with a pretty thick head of hair in the first place.

Hair Loss Anyone?
I have a receding hairline. It started after I was given a rx for bioidentical hormone troches (estriol 3.25mg. & progesterone 125mg.) I mentioned to the doctor at each of my appointments and she would never acknowledgethat the hormones could play a part in the hairloss. I know have to stop the troches due to an abnormal mammogram. I know I have to do something soon as the receding is getting more noticable. I pull my hair back and when I have tried bangs I can't stand anything on my forehead. I have been told that saw palmetto will help block the DHT (bad testosterone).

April22:
That is so weird that your doctor wouldn't acknowledge the role of hormones in your hair loss. There is definitely a connection! I remember losing a bunch a hair 3 months after delivering each of my babies. Clearly, our hair responds to dips and changes in hormones.
I am like you, I can't stand anything against my forehead, plus bangs break out my skin. I have left my hair long, even though it's falling out, because I need to be able to pull it back into a ponytail. My ponytail is very skinny now, but at least I still have one... Hopefully, the hair will start to grow back soon!

April 22: A receding hairline could mean that your testosterone levels are high in relation to your estrogen. Estriol is very weak estrogen and since you were using progesterone, which can convert into testosterone, you might have higher testosterone levels contributing to your receding hairline.

I don't know how long it takes for the hormone level to drop but I haven't taken the troches in over two months. From my research I know that the DHT (bad testosterone) is likely to be the cause. I know the estriol is the weak one and that is the reason I agreed to take it in the first place. The doctor who gave it to me swore that estriol is the protective hormone to the breast. After the abnornal mammogram I know now she didn't know what she was talking about. I was wondering if any of you know if vaginal testosterone can cause breast tissue problems. I'm waiting until my GYN doctor back next week to see what she thinks. Since I don't know what I will do about the vaginal atrophy and bladder issues if I don't have anything to keep the tissues healthy. It was interesting that you mentioned about the progesterone upping the testosterone. That's the same thing I asked the doctor and she wouldn't acknowledge that there was any connection. Thanks for your input. Right now my head is spinning trying to figure out what to do without hormone replacement.
