TAH and bowel function recovery

How long after a TAH does it take for "normal" bowel function to return? I had TAH on 4/3, hospital food was discusting, so I had basically only a liquid diet for the first 2 days. Thurs afternoon I had a frozen yogurt, then at home resumed normal diet of high fiber (grains, fruits and veggies), low sugar, and lots of water and grape juice. Finally took Millk of Mag today, but still nothing. Didn't know if this was normal, or if not, when I should worry/call my dr.

You might try taking Colace at night, it's a stool softener. That helped me, and if it didn't work, I used a Fleet Suppository..did the trick in about 10 minutes.

I have to say that it took me a good four weeks to finally get back to routine bowel movements without any assistance from stool softeners or suppositories, but that was just me.

I really wouldn't worry about it though, it's an easy fix if you don't go in another day or so. Try upping your fiber and water intake also, that will help.

I took ducolax. I think it took a few weeks for everything to return to normal. The narcotics can cause constipation, which can cause pain, it's a vicious cycle, but it does end. I remember those rogue gas pains, and definitely do not miss them!
