Q on Symptoms of Hormone levels post op

Hi everyone,

I need a little direction on what to expect after surgery. My TVA was on April 2nd and everything removed but my left ovary. I have been having hot flashes and severe night sweats last three nights. Is this a sign that my ovary is not putting off enough hormones? Do I need to call Dr tomorrow about this or wait until post op checkup? I am getting very emotional too. Crying for no reason and having nightmares about my DH that I would never have. Cheating on me and such.. We've been married 21 years and he is wonderful. Takes care of me and the kids when I am sick. Which has been often in the last couple of years due to my period problems. Is all of this normal reaction to the surgery? Your advice is much needed..

Talked with doctors office today finally and nurse is getting with Dr to see if I need to go ahead and have my hormone level checked. She said he might want to go ahead and start me on some type of hormone therapy. Thanks for your advice and experience. Always helps to hear your not going thru something that someone else hasn't already had.

I was just 38 when I had my hyst (now 39).
Because I kept both ovaries, they said I could not be going through menopause....night sweats,,,, severe mood swings including rage....crying jags.... depressed.... insomnia....
It took some time and kick start with estrogen cream for a few weeks for the very painful vaginal dryness and I took and still take MACA...
Not so sure they work as well now, but they are working as I get sore breasts, food cravings, pms, etc... right before I 'should' have a period.
Maybe you need to jump start them somehow.

CindyGrinz,
Are you only on Premarin cream now? What did the vaginal dryness feel like if you don't mind me asking? For me, it feels like the entrance to my vagina is irritated all of the time when sitting at my chair at work. I've been on the Premarin cream for about 5 weeks and keep hoping my symptoms will go away soon. I had my hormones tested, but my FSH was low...actually every hormone in my body was low. I've been very depressed and have insomnia and am still wondering if my hormones are different than pre-surgery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm the same age as you and kept my ovaries.

NO, I am not taking the Premarin cream any longer. My doctor weaned me off of it - she DID NOT WANT ME STAYING ON IT - was very sure to enforce that! She really does not want me to take ANY hormones and isn't too shy to enforce it. (I am not sure if it is because they stop the endo from dying off and can actually cause it to keep growing, or because of the cancer rates, or just what - all I know is she won't let me have it any more)
I injected the Premarin cream for four weeks daily, Then I injected it 3x a week for four weeks and now all I take is a natural herb called MACA (I swallow that). The MACA is suppose to balance out your entire hormonal system naturally. (seems to help a little bit for me - at least with the energy levels)
Not only was I irritated but when sitting too long it felt like a fire was burning down there. It was irritated and painful to have sex as well. Absolutely NO discharge or lubrication, not ever! Sort of felt like rug burn if you have ever had that.
Along with the Premarin, my doctor told me to use a thin layer of Crisco (yes, the white lard you bake with) after showering. Not to have baths and to use Aveeno to shower with instead of regular soap.
One other note you might like to be aware of is that I got a yeast infection but had no odor and NO DISCHARGE!!!! I kind of believe the Premarin cream gave it me. Had no idea it was a yeast infection. There was an odd twinge of an itch in passing for just a second or two but then was gone. Never ever suspected a yeast infection. It seems that since using the cream for yeast, the buring has gone completely away.
One last thing, for the dryness, Replens (purple water lily on the box) works WONDERFUL. It is soooo soothing. You use it 3x a week. Inject it. You buy it over the counter at any drug store or even Walmart.
Not sure if that helped at all but hope it did a little.

I had my TLH on Apruil 3rd as well and it took a few good days to get the bowels up and running esp. from the pain pills. I used SENECOT and this made thimgs move gently but the pain I get while its in route is bad. I do believe that the bowel runs very closely beneath the uterus/cervix area and that is why it hurts so much. I also had 1 ovary left behind as the DR didn't want me to start men. at age 41. I have noticed that my heart rate has been going sky high for no apparant reason and I get the chills a few times a day. Any input from all you experienced ladies???

Oh - you are still so freshly out of surgery. There will be lots of things that need to settle.
Yup the painful bowel movements were pretty bad for me but they did ease up with each passing week. Quite a few of us had that.
I had chills too - all part of the healing. BUT BE SURE the chills are not from a fever! If you have a fever - CALL YOUR DOCTOR.
The racing heart,,,, do you notice it only after you take pain meds? I stopped taking perscription pain meds for that exact reason and stuck with advil and being a couch potatoe cept for my daily (small) walks.
I would suggest you check your blood pressure and put a call into your doctor about your heart rate. Maybe it is just the pain meds for you too, but one cannot be to careful when it comes to your health. Your own doctor would be the best to advise you - please do give him/her a call. K?

The heart rate occurrances were without the pain killers in my system. I only take 8oomg of ibuprofen now and it was occuring. I did call MD and he sent me for blood work thing that I may be dehydrated. Didn't know one could cause the other but anyway, I'm awaiting the results.

Cindy,

So how long would you say it took for the darn irritation/burning to go away with the Premarin cream? Perhaps a total of 8 weeks including the yeast infection period? I honestly worry I"m going to be like this forever. I was on it for 2 weeks straight, then every other night for 2 weeks and now back on for 30 days. I think my doc is using it to heal the very traumatized area and also to jump start my estrogen which was only at 24 (but FSH at 7.7). You're practically the only person I've read about recently that also has this maddening irritation when just sitting. Sex is totally out right now, especially since they found granulated tissue and an adhesion that they now think needs to come out via outpatient surgery. We'll see what the good old oncologist has to say about that. He probably thinks it's in my head.
