Should 1500 mg of calcium daily be in supplements or combination of supplements/food

I am now at the place where I am feeling good enough after my tah/bso to try and figure out exactly what supplements I am going to take. I got minimal help from my Dr re this question just "take 1500 mg of calcium a day" I am wondering if anyone else counts dietary sources as part of their calcium, or if most just take 1500 mg of calcium supplementation. I would appreciate any help from others on this question. Thank you!

Hi!

My doctor suggested that I aim for 1,200 - 1,500 mg of calcium per day. To me that means either take supplements to total that amount, ingest foods/drinks rich in calcium to equal that amount or do a combination of things to reach that goal.

In addition to the calcium, it was recommended that I take half as much magnesium, so that would be 600 - 750 mg of magnesium per day.

There's an article in the Hormone Article List titled Necessary Supplements While Taking Estrogen which you may find interesting. As always, check with your doctor to see if the suggested supplements are safe for you.

I hope this helps you!

My natural health specialist, a nurse practitioner, recommended a calcium supplement of at least 750 mg as long as I am getting lots of dairy through my diet. She said to increase the supplement if my dietary dairy decreases.

She also said that however many mg of a calcium supplement I take, I should take the same amount of a magnesium supplement. She said the theory of halving the magnesium is outdated. It's interesting how health professionals differ on this idea.

My dr. said 1200mg of calcium with D in addition to my foods. The D is suppose to help your body absorb the HRT.
