For those who had anemia solely caused by menorrhagia: how long after the hysterectomy did it take for your anemia to go away? And did you take iron supplements post-surgery?
I was diagnosed as borderline prior to surgery ("9" they told me), and I'm currently taking a daily multivitamin with iron. My surgeon prescribed iron prior to surgery but not afterward. Recovery is going well but I still tire rather easily and sometimes I'm short of breath, as if I'm at high altitude. (Or is that just a surgery aftereffect.)
My Dr. told me I would need to take iron for 2-3 months after surgery to build up my iron stores. I was very anemic. No blood transfusions but very close. Before surgery I was taking three 300mg tablets a day. Since surgery I have been taking two.
I was so anemic before surgery that my Dr wouldn't do the surgery without a transfusion. I had the transfusion on Sunday, surgery on Monday.I could tell a difference immediantly. I felt better the day after my LAVH than I had in months. I am now taking 1 iron tablet daily and feel wonderful. I go for my 4 week post op tomorrow and am anxious to see what my hemoglobin is.
I had my surgery last August, and I am still anemic. The dr. told me that it can take up to a year to totally replace what you have lost previously. It took longer than just one period to become anemic and use up our reserve of iron. Yes, I take iron twice a day. I still get tired, but not as tired as before, it does get better
