I am six weeks post op and I forgot to ask my dr. about lifting....do you think it is safe for me to life my 27 lb. grandson now? I tried the other day and it wasn't comfortable for me, or maybe I was just nervous about lifting him....your thoughts?

Hi (((Siamouno)))
You may need to work on strengthening your abdominal muscles. I had this situation with my grandson too and found I needed to be careful. Even if the dr says yes, you can lift, you have to remember that you haven't been using those muscles and it's very easy to strain yourself and cause pain.
Another thing I found was that I needed to stretch(very gently). Even once the incisions are healed that tissue all around them is still healing and working to get back to normal. I would approach lifting anything that heavy with caution for a while. It's also probably a good idea to call and ask if the dr recommends any lifting restrictions for you. Some drs say no.
You can always sit and pull him into your lap, see how that is at first. Have fun.

lifting

I am one year post op and I don't think I lifted over 20 pounds for the first 3 months after my surgery. I did not have any complications but if I tried to lift anything I felt "Twinges".

Maybe Grandma can sit on the couch and the grandbabies can climb (GENTLY) onto your lap instead. At least he will still be able to be there with you and it won't strain you as much. Besides if you hurt yourself now it will be even longer before you can lift him!!

At my 6 week check, my gyn said I could lift more than the 10 lbs. originally ordered but no heavy lifting for 4 more weeks. She also said that if it hurt, don't do it. I have lifted up to 25 lbs. now & that I felt a bit. I agree with the other girls - take it a bit at a time.

Best wishes,
Sue
