adenomyosis,"fixed ovary" and back pain
Hi
I am new here and I am so glad I found this site. I think I am finally figuring out the cause of my chronic back pain, and more recent cramping and irregular periods and just feeling constantly like I have bad PMS. First my doctor thought I had a kidney infection and treated me for that, but I was back in her office three weeks later feeling awful. This time they did the vaginal ultrasound, which I wish they had done in the first place, since I don't really think I had a kidney infection. THey had a hard time finding my left ovary, and it was very painful when they did. My whole uterus was painful on examination. They said they think I have adenomyosis, and also that my left ovary is unmoveable. They are not sure why, and said it could be scar tissue or adhesions. They said this, or the adenomyosis, or both could be causing my back pain. My pain is on my left side, by my tailbone, and hurts all the time lately. Does anyone have any experience with the "fixed ovary?" I think I am going to have a hysterectomy. I scheduled my pre-op appointment, after considering going back on the continuous use birth control pill. I took the pill for seven years straight after my son was born, and just stopped it 4or 5 months ago because of bad migraine headaches while taking it. I didn't have the adenomyosis as bad then, but the headaches were awful. Does anyone take the pill for adenomyosis? I am 42 and am not planning on having more children. My doctor didn't say anything about removing the cervix. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this? She did say my right ovary looked good, and if I kept that one my hormones would remain normal. THis was comforting to me, because I would be so scared of the instant menopause, with my migraines. With my left ovary, she said it would depend on what they found when they were in there, if they took it out or not. Has anyone else kept just one ovary? I would appreciate any advice anyone has. This is so scary, but it is good to read of so many others that are feeling so much better after the surgery.

adenomyosis,"fixed ovary" and back pain
We have many members who have had to have one ovary removed and they found that their remaining ovary provided the hormones they needed. So hopefully you will do well if you retain your right ovary!
We have many Adendomyosis Resources you might want to read through to learn more about the suspected adeno.
There are risks involved with having a hyst as it is a major surgery so you do want to weigh all the pros and cons and find out if there are any options available for you. You may also want to consider seeking a second opinion before scheduling surgery to be sure surgery is the right option for you.
Many best wishes to you for whatever is right for you!

adenomyosis,"fixed ovary" and back pain
Hi, THanks so much for your reply. I have been doing a lot of studying on here and learning alot. My husband thinks I should try the pill again. I may try it for a short time and see, but I am leaning towards the surgery. The good thing is I don't plan on having more kids so that isn't a problem. I'm so glad I have my one son, and he is a handful. I am 42 so don't really "need" my uterus, but it's still a hard decision.
Thanks again! Maureen
