robotic laporascopic hysterectomy, anyone had one?

Hi, I am new here and looking to talk to anyone who has had the above procedure. I am 47 and have fibroids. Up until recently the bleeding was controlled with a Mirena IUD. After two years of successful use, I had a heavy period which has lasted 6 weeks and expelled the IUD. I am on Prometrium but I am still bleeding. My Doctor uses robotics and says the recovery will be much faster and I will have less pain then with an open hysterectomy. I want to believe him but have not been able to find testimonials from other women who have had this. Lots of stuff is written by the doctors and the makers of the robot....but I would like to hear from the patients. Anyone?

Hi Jeriblu,

It sounds like you are talking about the *Da Vinci Robotic Hyst*. Here is a link to past threads on the hyst type that might help you out:

I am sure some current Hyster Sisters having the surgery type will post also.

Sending best wishes~

robotic hysterectomy

Hi jeriblu, I had my surgery done on the 2nd of July and I am down to maybe two pain pills a day. The five inscions are healing great and I was up and walking and home on the 2nd day. I am so happy that I had this procedure and I recommend it to anyone going for surgery. I still get tired if I do to much because I feel so good. My first bowel movement was crampy but bearable and no bad side effects as yet. I had a radical hysterectomy because of endometrial cancer and lymph nodes were taken. I haven't seen my doctor yet to ask him more questions on the whole surgery. I will keep you posted. I hope this convinces you to go this way. I'm in Portland Oregon and I was treated so well by everyone involved. The site with the best news about the DaVinci is UNC. Check it out. I am 56 and overweight but doing great.

Hi..my doctor warned me that people are usually shocked at the thought of robotic surgery...it is actually a robotic machine that aids in the laporoscopic part of the procedure..seems up to date with all the newer technology....I will be sleeping so I am more worried about waking up and dealing with pain.....but you usually worry more than u need to...Good LucK

Wow thank you so much! That is great news. It is good to know that what the doctor is telling you is the truth. Please keep me posted everyone. And I will do the same. More later!

I had robotic surgery also on May 31 2007 and was home the next day. I did not have to take any pain meds. I am doing great. The only problem was my cancer was not diagnosed before surgery and was found from path later on so as a precaution I now have to do radiation. All my tests did not show endo cancer. My dx as stage 1 grade 1 endo contained after path report. All doctors were shocked. As far as the surgery went I was on the table for 5 1/2 hours as robotics takes longer. I also had a very large cyst on my ovary that they really thought something was going to come back from that but thank God it was benign. My only issue was the doctor had no idea about the cancer in the uterus as it was well hidden so they took out the uterus in pieces instead of on a block so I have now been recommeded from the tumor team to have rad for precatuion. All in all the robotic surgery was great.....and went real well. No major problems. BM OK 3 days after surgery. Was walking a few hours after surgery. My doctor was a GYN/ONC that did the surgery. Normally with my low stage just surgery would have been enough NFT, but they want to make sure no micro cells got away. My thoughts are with you. Be well.

Hi Sunrise, I am into my 2nd week of recovery from robotic surgery and I did know about endometrial cancer, left side with cyst size of softball and I had all taken out with lymph nodes. Just got results back yesterday on them clean, but still waiting on the wash results. The Dr. also said they think there are 2 different cancers, very rare so waiting for that also.
I will do the radiation, but not chemo. Don't know what he wants me to do just yet. I am feeling wonderfull and I am a overweight woman with belly fat but healing pretty good.
My doctor was also a GYN/ONC, knows his stuff. You be well also.

How does one find a gyn or a gyn/onc that has been trained to use the robotic or davinci method?

I'm in a small town and would probably have to travel 2 to 4 hours to a big city that would have surgeons trained in this procedure.

Anyone here in that situation? How was getting home after the surgery?

I also had the DaVinci robotic surgery for fibroids

I had this in December. I had great results and a VERY easy recovery - I was (I think) the first one to drop off of the recovery thread - my hyst. was so easy and became such a non-issue that I didn't fit in there after a while. I went home the next day, and I didn't have to take ANY narcotic pain pills afterwards - ditched an entire bottle of Vicodin.
