Chemo patients being around strep throat

How long until a person undergoing chemo treatment is able to be around someone with strep throat? The doctor told us that someone with strep throat is no longer contagious once they've been on antibiotics for 24 hours. I'm having a hard time believing that.

Chemo patients being around strep throat

I am no expert, but having had a child who got strep up to 8 times a year: yes, once on meds after 24 hours it is 'safe.'

However, here is some info to ponder. The doctor who initiated the 'no kids in school the first 24 hours of starting strep meds' told me in person that he was sorry he got that law passed in my state because if you test an entire school, up to a third of the kids are strep carriers. They feel fine and exhibit no symptoms at all. That's how my daughter kept getting strep over and over and over. For someone on chemo I can understand your worries! The people on strep meds are the 'safe' ones...........it's all the invisible carriers that scare me. Maybe ask the doctor about that???? Good luck. I send you a hug. E.

I don't know the specifics on strep and antibiotics but it is generally true that most contagious illnesses are most contagious during the incubation stage, before the patient is even showing symptoms!

What elefante says is true -- we don't even know who is carrying what at any given time, and this is why chemo patients must take general precautions.
