I had my TAH on Monday the 16th, I haven't had a pain med since noon yesturday and the only meds I'm on now is Repliva an iron supplement.

Does anyone know when can I have a glass of wine? Should there be any reason why I can't?

From my understanding it's fine to have some... as long as you don't mix it with any pain meds... and you said you hadn't needed them... so I would go for it... in moderation of course... wouldn't want you to overdo anything due to "lack of feeling" from the alcohol

cute comment... hope you enjoy your evening... I would love to have a glass of wine, even bought some of our favorite before the surgery.... sigh, but I'm still on my pain meds, so it'll have to wait... I'm not really a big drinker so it's no big deal, but it would be nice to sit and relax w/my dh and a glass

It can take about 2 weeks for all of the anesthesia to get out of your system... you might want to hold off another week.

I know my doc said I could drive after 1 week if I had to, but she would rather me wait 2... I drove 1 mile down the road on day 12 to the movie rental store and felt woozy, fuzzy headed... like I was under the influeence with no pain meds. After about 16 days, it was totally gone. Take it slow, your body has been through a lot! Maybe just have 1 or half a glass and see how you feel!

It does take a while for the anesthesia to clear your system, so wine might affect you quicker than you'd think.

One option would be to make Wine Spritzers -- mix wine with cranberry juice or "clear" soda (7-up, ginger ale, Fresca, etc.) -- at least you are NOT drinking straight alcohol. And at this point, more "mix" than wine would probably be better!

Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can contribute to post op bleeding. I'm not sure if enough time has passed or not that it would be safe for you. It would be wise for you to ask this question of your doctor.

My TAH was on June 29 and I don't think I had a glass of wine until late last week, close to my third week post op. I'd take other's advise and give it a bit more time. That said, once another week or so has passed, Debbie's suggestion to mix a little wine with soda water is a good one. It is what I did. Maybe 3 oz. wine to 4 - 5 oz. soda water and ice. Very refreshing and yummy. Weird thing though: before surgery I only drank red wine. DH bought some and I had a sip and YUCK! Suddenly I cannot stand the taste. White is fine though.

The mix idea sounds really good... I agree w/the other gals, I hadn't looked at how close your surgery date was!

I think, as with everything post-op, we all need to really listen to our bodies whenever we drink, go out, or do things in general.

Anyway, I hope you had a nice relaxing evening.

Thank you everyone for the great adivse. However, I did have two glasses before reading all this and I didn't notice any affects. I certainly didn't want any more and I will of course not make this a daily routine.

But it was nice to sit with hubby and not feel restricted or in pain or even think about the surgery. Just a relaxing time together.

Again Thanks for the advise I will certainly keep this in mind!
