Hi Gals,

My pre op isn't until the afternoon before my surgery and I was wondering about earrings and rings, whether they make you remove them and leave them at home? I haven't had any surgery for about 14 yrs and don't remember. What were some of your experiences with this?

Leave it at home. For sanitary reasons in ER, other than that safe guarding your personal property is a huge responsibility for the hospital.

They told me that for security reasons (after all, you're pretty medicated for the first 24 hours or so), I should leave *all* valuables at home, including jewelry. They would have let me wear it after the OR, but I got by OK for a few days without it. I didn't even bring change for the vending machine.

My hospital instructions were to remove all jewelry, including body piercings, before surgery. I'm just leaving mine home (going in tomorrow).

Thanks ladies,

I had a feeling that was the answer. Now I will have to work on getting the rings off! My wedding ring will be the most difficult! Good thing for soap or lotion, eh?

ugh.. no jewelry

The hospital I go to insists you remove all jewelry and body piercings for any type of surgery. I, however, refuse to remove my wedding band (it's plain) and the cartlidge piercing at the top of my ear (this one hurts like the devil to put back in), so they just cover them with paper tape. As long as I've taken out the other 3 sets of earrings they don't give me a lot of flack. Good luck!

Leave all your jewlry and valuables at home. They will make you take them off if you wear them to the hospital. Better safe than sorry.
