Suprapubic Catheter

Can someone please explain to me what this is exactly and why you would have one after your surgery? I have been having problems with my bladder after my TVH... this was brought up...

I had one of those following my surgery because of the bladder repair sling. It was in when I woke up and the last thing to come out before I left. Because of the bladder lift the Dr wanted to make sure my bladder was emptying correctly and fully. For a couple of days I had "bladder training", where the catheter hose was snipped closed, and only opened when I had to urinate. All of my intake and output was measured. After I thought I was done the nurse would come in and let anything that was left in my bladder drain into the bag, and then measure it again. By the second day, my bladder was pretty much draining completely. I complained to my Dr at my 6 week checkup that I didn't really know that a needle was going to be stuck into my pubic area, attached to a catheter. and although tolerable, was not pleasant having removed . He said that frequent catheterisation, where they just stick a tube up through the uretha would have been much more unpleasant, and might have intoduced infection.

I had one and they removed that and the pain pump the second day in the hospital. I think its to make sure your output is what it should be and so you don't have to get up that first day.
