Hi Karroll,

I am not taking hrt. Yes, the hot flashes are bad, but I am very happy to not be taking any meds. I have a post asking if I am normal with the hot flashes and other (minor) things. It seems that all is well though.

All in all, I am fine. Maybe you should try not taking anything for a while and see what you think.

Good luck to you Karroll.

Hi Karroll,

Nope, I am taking nothing. I find that I feel just fine accept for the hot flashes ever so often (having one right now!!).

I was expecting mood swings and all kinds of other things, but I have nothing to complain about. Honest. My doctor recommended that I wait to try the hrt and gave me an rx to be on the safe side. Needless to say, I never used them and I am happy I didn't.

I will tell you that I did try an over the counter hrt one time. I used it for three days. I felt weird...then on the third day, I could not even figure out a simple excel program and I was so frustrated and mad that I started to cry. That was the same day I threw those pills in the trash!!! I have been perfect since then.

I do not take any hormones either due to a strong family history of breast cancer. I do get hot flashes but they pass. I know women who take them and others, who like myself feel that the benefits do not outweigh the risks. My cousin took them and had a heart attack during the first year after her surgery. My friends mom took them and suffered from migraines as a result. I know some women who take them and they say they couldn't live without them and they have not had any problems. Everyone is different and it is a decision you and your doctor should discuss. I keep telling myself that if this is the worst of what I have to deal with for awhile, then so be it.

Grateful to be healthy......Glad it's all over.

Hi Karroll,

Too bad about your digestive system being unable to tolerate soy and other things. I have not been on any HRT since my TAH/BSO and have tried a variety of alternative therapies.

Here is what I have found helpful: You may want to try acupuncture and/or homeopathic tablets. I used Klimaktheel, which is a menopausal remedy, and you can find that on the internet. All homeopathic medications are nontoxic, but may take a while to work. You also need to take them about 20 - 30 minutes before or after meals, coffee, and mint, so as to get them into your system without any interactions. Flax seed, freshly ground in your coffee grinder, is also helpful, but it may cause gas. Still you won't know until you try it. Sometimes I still have trouble sleeping at night and use Valerian drops before bedtime.

Wishing you a continued good recovery and much health!

Ursula
