Surgery= 9-7-2007 11 am
Staples and stitches removed 9-9-2007 9am. Didn't hurt. No anesthetic. I forget the name of the type of staple. I think there were like 4-5 plus some stitches. I have steri strips (bandaids?) now.

For me, the only staples removed that hurt a little were those that had skin healing over them - that was after a week. I certainly wouldn't have wanted them all to be like that, but fortunately, it was only a couple. I think the longer it's left, the more you've healed and the more it will hurt.

Besides, at that point, I'd had far worse pain. Everything also felt better once they were taken out (no more catching on my clothing).

Let us know how you go texpa!

I was wondering about that. Everyone is saying their's were taken out soon after their surgery. It's been almost 3 weeks for me. Yes, there is some pulling on the skin. I checked them tonight and most of them are straight. I'm hoping that my doctor just wasn't doing it right (plus, I don't think she had the right tool).

Thanks Helga!

Not sure your surgery, but my doctor was very upset my staples were not removed by the nurse before I was checked out of the hospital on my 4th day. I had to call my doctor a week later telling her my staples were hurting and the area is turning red, she says come in tomorrow, they were suppose to be removed before you left... then on the ohter hand my sister had bowel surgery and had to keep her staples for 3 weeks !! UGH that would have killed me so are you sure you should still have the staples? Good luck

I had my staples removed at 10 days post op. Dr. left them in that long because my scar is/was weak and needed the support. Anyway, it hurt like the dickens. I've had staples 5 times before and they never hurt anymore than a slight pinch but this time it was different....Dr. said it was because some of the staples had twisted and he had to really pull on them to get them out. I was in tears....but once they were out the pain was totally gone...I have the steri strips now...)

Hi there,
This is the fourth time having staples for me, and I am going to have them out on thurs, one week post op.
As far as the other times getting staples out, it didn't hurt. Part of the reason is sometimes during your surgery, they cut through some of the nerves. I have no feeling for about one inch above my incision.
I am a nurse on a maternity floor, and I do take out staples for a lot of ladies who have had c-sections before they go home. There is no harm in taking a pain medecine before you have them out. It is more discomfort than pain type of feeling.
Personally, I think having the dressing removed hurt more than the staples.
I hope this is helpful

Yeah, my instructions were to call and have them removed in 2 to 3 weeks. so I picked the middle.

Now, on a side note, the staples were really bothering me. I had 32 of them. My doctor took out 4 today. Well, not sure why, but I woke up in the middle of the night trying to figure out how the staples were in. I ended up taking them all out by myself except for 6 problem ones. Guess I'll have the other doctor do those on Thursday.

I'm really thinking that my PCP didn't have the right type of equipment. I did a little searching on the internet and staples removers are supposed to pull up the lower level of the staples. I don't think that was what was happening today. And thus the reason it was hurting so much.
