Cancer of the vulva

I am writing this because there is so little about cancer of the vulva in hopes it will help someone.

It's now been over 24 years 1984 (which is wonderful, I am a 24 year cancer survivor).
I returned to my OB for my 6 weeks follow up after my daughter was born and I was complaining of itiching and burning near my episiotomy. He said there was some lumps in the area and he could take care of it. I was put in the hospital a couple of days later and a few more stitches in that area of my body he walks back in my room with my husband who is visibly shaken (his father had died of cancer only a couple of months before) the DR. announces it was not what he thought it was, it is cancer of the vulva. He had not identiified locations when he did the procedure and would need to redo biopsies the next day. Needless to say biopsies confirmed what I had already been told and the next step was to schedule a simple vulvectomy (believe me there is nothing simple about it) and reconstructive surgery. Being 24 years old, young, dumb and a baby at home I agreeded to let my OB DR. and the local hospital do the surgery (I live in a different area now). After two weeks in the hospital and with many stitches I went home cancer free. A couple of years later I had the good fortune of seeing a GYN oncologist who did redo the reconstructive surgery. If you are faced with this type of cancer, it is rare especially if you are young please see a GYN oncologist.

I have been followed very closly over the years, there have been many biopsies but no reoccurrence. On 8/21/07 I had a LAVH/BSO and no cancer was found.
