High Blood Pressure

Checked my blood pressure at store tonight. It was 139 over 91
with a pulse rate of 122. It has been higher than usual the last 3-4 months (it use to be low) I takre drixoral twice every day-think
I need to switch to something else. I have also been on CONTINOUS birth control pills for over 7 weeks now. I know I had spent alot of time walking around in the store prior to taking it
but not for it to get that high. I took Phen-Phen 6 years ago so I go to a cardiologist tomorrow for one more pre-surgery test.
Is it possible they would postpone surgery? Anyone else been
through this? I think they are doing the thing where they do like an ultrasound and look ay the heart chambers- is that an electrocardiogram? I have today through Monday to take the BC pill, and I am taking no more Drixorals and no more salt. Would appreciate your input. Pill has added 8-10 pounds on me and I am about 50 lbs. overweight. HELP!
P.S. Surgery is first thing Tuesday at 7:30.

I think you're okay

Hi,

I'm no doctor, but I don't think the BP you mentioned is high enough to keep you from surgery... obviously you should discuss it with your doctor though. Your heart rate is higher than mine normally is, but you did say you had been walking around. Unless you have reason not to, I would make sure your doctor knows all of this and then trust his / her judgement.... and if you DO have reason not to trust your doctor... get out NOW, princess!

I'm one of those people who ALWAYS has elevated BP in the doctor's office, and I find that doing it in the grocery store elicits the same reaction... I don't know why. I take mine at home and it is fine. I go to the doctor's office, it's way high!

I had a emergency D&C in January due to REALLY heavy bleeding. When they took my BP on admission my BP was something like 180 over 150! I don't remember what my pulse rate was but I'm sure it was way up there... I was close to hyperventilating!

I don't think that a few somewhat elevated numbers are going to keep you out of surgery. I think you are expected to be a little stressed at this time in your life. And besides, high BP is a slow, progressive disease... it doesn't kill you in a few months or even years as long as your heart is healthy. And you say you are having some extra tests for that.

Again, I'm not a doctor, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it until you have had time to discuss it with him/her.

Best wishes.

High Blood Pressure

Claudia

I have had high blood pressure since I had my first child in 1993. I have been on blood pressure pills but now I am off. I am usually around 135 over 80-90 You are in the high normal range. I don't think they will cancel your surgery, but I am not a doctor. Once you have your hysterctomy and are off the pill you will see your blood pressure drop. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure throughout your surgery. Relax for when you worry your pressure goes up.

Take Care

High Blood Pressure

Hi Sheri

When I had my TVH, last December, my blood pressure was at 145/??? (can't remember - it was high). I still had my surgery.

I'm not a doctor, but here's what I think: the readings are done more to evaluate your condition than to evaluate wheather or not you should have the surgery.

If you're really concerned, and I really understand why you would be, call your doctor and ask him.

Don't forget that your BP can fluctuate dramatically from one moment to the next!!!

Hang in there, the wait is almost over

My BP was high (I thought)

When I went in for my surgery 6/21, my BP was over 140/??. I thought it was really high and they'd cancel surgery. They told me it wasn't "high" considering what was going to happen that day. I have "white coat" syndrome - and I have asthma. I was terrified that since I couldn't take my asthma meds that I'd rip myself apart after surgery (or for that matter, mess things up during the procedure).

Be sure and share your concerns with your Dr and your anesthesiologist (sp?). I did, and was very glad that I did. After surgery, they sent in a respiratory therapist to get me to do some deep breathing (necessary to get enough oxygen to the cells to start the healing process).

I did just fine. Hang in there - my prayers are with you.

High Blood Pressure

I have very high blood pressure. It will eventually run about 213/180 if I go off of my medications for a week. I was very surprised when they told me NOT to take the pills the morning of my surgery. I asked them, "Do you know how HIGH this is going to be if I don't take them?" I was told that they have ways to keep it under control during the surgery, and that a lot of people actually have kind of low blood pressure the first day or so after coming out of general anesthesia.

I also have an abnormal EKG. Neither of these conditions were grounds for not having the surgery.

I am 18 days post op now, I've been back on my medications since the morning after my surgery, and my blood pressure is still a little lower than it was in the weeks leading up to surgery. I have no doubt that all of the pre-op anxiety and pain I experienced were driving the readings up.

I think that ultrasound you were talking about might be called an echocardiogram. Not too sure on that, though.

Prayers and {{{HUGS}}}.

High Blood Pressure

Update--- Went to the cardiologist today for tests requested by anesthesia. I was on Phen- Phen 5-6 years ago and there have been reports of heart valve problems with some people who used it as you all know. He said the EKG looed normal as did the echogram they did-- I think that is a fancy electroardiogram.
Blood pressure is boarderline. Still 140 over 90 which is the magic boarderline they do not want you to cross. I am trying to stay off the drixoral and have 3 more days on BC pills. You all are a big comfort to me with your answers to my post on this. According to the machone at the store I thought I was ready to Kheel over then and there! I guess they just post really stern warnings even at a boarderline level-- enough to scare you never the less. Hopefully after surgery with some weight loss and no BC pill I can get this under control. Thanks again!

High Blood Pressure

I also have borderline high blood pressure, and when I went in for D&C last summer, I was very nervous and the reading was very high (something like 188/105). The Anesthesiologist said if it was high when I went into surgery, they give IV meds to keep it under control during surgery. When I had my hyst in Sept., I knew it would be high because of nervousness and just plain fear. So I think the Drs. are very used to dealing with this.

Good luck to you.

High Blood Pressure

Hello,

When I went to my preop visit my blood pressure was 139/91. I take tenormin once a day. They did an EKG because my brother was only 37 when he had a stroke. It was fine.

You need to be sure about taking your medicine. I've read several replies who did not take their medicine the day of the surgery. I was told to be sure and take my tenormin when I woke up the day of surgery with as little water as possible. You need to make sure. My surgery was at 10:15 a.m.

Good Luck. Soon you will be on the other side and everything will be better.
